Our recent visit to Northeastern Ohio
On St. Patrick's Day, we visited four newer wineries in northeastern Ohio: Myrddin Winery, Mastropietro Winery, Candlelight Winery and Emerine Estates. We had a wonderful trip and found that all of this up-and-coming wineries have a lot going for them. It was cold and windy, but we found several warm and inviting tasting rooms to visit. All the reviews have been posted...so check out our website to read our experiences on our latest adventure.

Unique Lodging in Kinsman, Ohio
The Dream Horse Guesthouse
While on our latest winery adventure in northeast Ohio, we spent the night at the Dream Horse Guesthouse in Kinsman, OH. Situated near the Ohio-Pennsylvania border, the Dream Horse is an excellent stopping point, as it is close to several Ohio and Pennsylvania wineries. Our hosts, Catherine and Allan Kaulback, were most gracious and made us feel right at home. We stayed in the fourth floor suite complete with spiral staircase, full kitchen and dining table. The luxurious bedding made for a dreamy night of sleep. We awakened to the smell of homemade scones baking in the oven and were also treated to bacon, fresh fruit and omelets made with local free-range eggs. The Dream Horse Guest house has a lovely country setting with horse barn and pasture. We highly recommend this beautiful and unique bed and breakfast when you're traveling to north east Ohio. Check out their website for more photos and information about the accommodations they offer

Where we're headed in April: Moyer's Winery and Restaurant in Manchester, Ohio and The Indiana Wine Fair

April 14th, we will be dining at Moyer's Winery and Restaurant in Manchester, Ohio. This dinner is being planned to celebrate Sharon's birthday. Moyer's Winery is the very first winery we visited on our winery adventures, and we've often talked about going back. On our first visit, we only had time for a wine tasting and didn't get a chance to dine in their restaurant. We thought a birthday celebration would be a great time to re-visit this beautiful winery on the Ohio River.

Winery Adventures is proud to be a sponsor of the Indiana Wine Fair!

Indiana Winemaker and Renowned Chef Pair for Award at Taste of Elegance

West Lafayette, Ind. - A popular Indiana winemaker and a renowned chef recently took top prize in the 11th Annual Taste of Elegance.

Sponsored by Indiana Pork, Taste of Elegance is a culinary competition designed to inspire innovative and exciting ways to prepare pork. The competition brings together talented chefs from across the country to compete in regional and national competitions. The Indiana competition featured chefs from a variety of backgrounds, from upscale dining establishments and country clubs to catering facilities.

Indiana Pork enlisted the help and knowledge of the Indiana Wine Grape Council for the 2007 event to sponsor the Wine Pairing award, given to the chef who best paired an Indiana wine with his featured pork dish.  The winner was Chef Dan Dunville of Ruths' Chris Steakhouse, Indianapolis, who paired his braised pork shoulder entree with French Lick Winery's Traminette.

"The wine pairings were judged on two criteria: how well the wine enhanced the pork entree and the chef's rationale for choosing the selected wine to accompany the dish," said John Doty, Owner and Winemaker at French Lick Winery.  "We are excited that our Traminette was featured with Chef Dunville's pork entree."

"The Indiana wine industry was thrilled to be a part of Taste of Elegance," said Jeanette Merritt, Marketing Specialist of the Indiana Wine Grape Council.  "Indiana Pork and the Taste of Elegance is just one opportunity where commodity groups can highlight that Indiana agriculture is diverse and that it provides high quality and valuable food products to consumers."

The chefs were not the only ones to benefit from IWGC's participation. They also sponsored a wine tasting that featured 10 of Indiana's own wineries to guests attending the Taste of Elegance. These wines were voted on by the guests and an award was also given to French Lick Winery for "People's Choice Favorite Wine".

The French Lick Winery was established in 1995 and since that time has become one of Indiana's premier wineries. The winery is located in the former Kimball Piano Factory in West Baden, Indiana. Owner and vintner, John Doty, takes great pride in the wines made with the expert assistance of Kim Doty, owner and cellarmaster.  French Lick wines have received over 250 medals in state, national and international competitions.

The wineries Heaven's View Vineyard was planted in the spring of 1998 and is located approximately 20 miles north of the winery on Kim's family Hoosier Homestead Farm in Martin County overlooking the White River valley. The vineyard's 3 1/2 acres is comprised of the first planting of Norton grapes in Indiana, as well as Chambourcin, Traminette, Vidal, and Vincent varietals. These varietals thrive in Indiana soils where traditional varieties often struggle due to harsh weather.

About Indiana Wine Grape Council
The Indiana Wine Grape Council seeks to enhance economic development in the state by establishing a successful wine grape industry through research and marketing development. The program provides extension specialists in enology (winemaking), viticulture (grape growing), and marketing to assist commercial and amateur grape growers and winemakers. The Indiana Wine Fair

The Indiana Wine Fair, to be held at the Story Inn, has become the largest wine event in Southern Indiana. This event is open to every one of Indiana's 32 wineries. Great wines can be made from many other fruits, some of which can be of exceptional quality due to Indiana's climate and rich soil.  At the Indiana Wine Fair 2007, you will find many nice grape wines, but also delectable wines fermented from blackberries, apples, rhubarb and even dandelions.  Be venturesome!  Open your mind to your palate!  Virtually every Indiana winery will be participating in the 2007 Indiana Wine Fair. Visit the Story Inn's website: www.storyinn.com. From there, you will be able to visit the websites of those wineries. Independent tasters will be judging the wines in six categories. The Indiana Wine Fair 2007 is an opportunity to spend a leisurely Saturday afternoon sampling Hoosier wines in a bucolic Hoosier setting??”the historic 19th Century village of Story, Indiana.
