OCTOBER 11, 2006
You know the PlayStation 3 launch is close when the preorders at GameStop and Electronics Boutique have finally been opened. But how long did they last? Did you manage to get one? If not, at least we've got a bunch of PS3 goodies for you to read about and look at...

PS3 Preorder Madness
On a weekly basis lately, Sony has continued to give us reasons to call the PlayStation 3's launch cycle one of the most interesting and chaotic ever. After the news hit that the system would be in seriously short supply in North America, eager prospective owners started sweating their chances of getting a unit on launch day. Now it's obvious why: GameStop and Electronics Boutique have confirmed their incredibly limited allotments. Eight units per store, and two of those going to employee purchases? Ouch. The worst part is, by the time you read this, that paltry sum of available units will all have been reserved--but then again, even holding a preorder doesn't guarantee you a console on day one. November 17th is going to be a bloodbath, isn't it?

Hands-On
Call of Duty 3
With the launch so close, third parties are finally starting to lift the curtains on the PS3 projects they've been working on. For instance, I was just at Activision last week, where I got to play Call of Duty 3 on all three of the next-gen platforms. As expected, there's not a ton of difference between the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions--you can use the PS3 controller to bodily perform a melee attack if you want, but that's about it. But the game is still shaping up to be a worthy next-gen successor to the series. The campaign seems to feature the same sort of intense WWII shooting action you'd expect, although the new class-based, vehicular multiplayer mode has clearly gotten the biggest upgrades. Hit up our new preview for screens, movies, and the full run-down.

Review
God Hand
Finally, if you (perhaps wisely) have decided to hold off on the next-gen transition for a bit, there's plenty of quality software coming for the PS2. And with such a large installed base, that may be the case for quite a while. Case in point, Capcom's God Hand, which I originally thought was just another generic brawler with a too-serious-for-its-own-good plotline. But it's anything but (well, okay, it is a brawler). The game doesn't take itself seriously at all, with ridiculous special moves and a driving surf rock soundtrack. The only thing God Hand does take seriously is the core fighting engine that underpins all this madness. Read the full review (or watch the video review) to find out why God Hand is a worthy action purchase for the PS2.
