Hooks and Hangers
==========================================
In an open storage area, well-designed hangers
can contribute
nicely to the decorative scheme, especially if
you coordinate their
style and color. Designer hangers come in a
wide variety of styles
and materials. In utilitarian storage areas, it's more economical
and efficient to use scre*w hooks, wire coat hooks, and other
traditional hardware. Most have scre*w-in tips that are simple
to install.
One especially good longtime favorite is the
spring clip. A typical
clip holds handles rangiing from 3/4 to 1-1/4
inches in diameter,
and you put it up with a single scre*w. You
can also get spring
clips mounted on a sliding track. There are
even ones that hook
onto pegboard.

Fastening to
Masonary
==========================================
To secure most items to a concrete, brick, or
cinder-block wall,
you'll need to drill a hole and insert a wall
fastener. Use lead
anchors for most loads and expansion shields for
exceptionally
heavy ones. Use plastic anchors and fiber
plugs for very light
items. To drill a hole in masonry, use a
carbide-tipped bit on an
electric drill, preferably a variable-speed model
that will let you
drill at a low speed. As you drill, move
the bit in and out rather
than pushing hard and continously on it. If
the drill begins to stall,
release the trigger, or you'll burn out the
motor.
Caution: When
drilling into masonry, always wear safety goggles
and work gloves.
