Subject: Self Improvement Directory Tips - How Flexible Are You! - 3rd December 2005 - December04, 2005

Hello Subscriber,

THE QUICK TIP

We definitely must never give up - many people have missed out on reaching their goals because they gave up too soon. But we can??™t afford to be dogmatic either. We must be prepared to be flexible and adapt our plans and goals to changing circumstances if necessary. As the old saying goes, there??™s more than one way to skin a cat!

Long time readers will now that almost from the time I arrived in Ireland in July I??™ve been trying to get the phone and broadband connected at our new house. Four weeks ago the phone was connected, but not broadband.

Well it??™s finally happened! This week the phone company called and told me that, ahead of schedule, broadband was now active. I was so thrilled that I even managed to ignore the ???ahead of schedule??™ comment!

Before I moved to Ireland, my new Irish wife, Kate, had moved to London for a couple of years, and during her time there has often been frustrated by English bureaucracy, which she was convinced was much worse than in Ireland. I??™m not sure if she still thinks the same, I know I don??™t after the phone fiasco and other experiences since I??™ve had since I??™ve been here! I think it can be frustrating and difficult to get things done in any country in the world in one way or another. No doubt wherever you live most of you would have your own horror stories to tell!

This week, continuing with our recent themes of values and achieving goals, our Tip is How Flexible Are You? No, I??™m not talking about gymnastics or anything like that! It??™s about why we need to be able to change our plans and adapt to changing circumstances if necessary.

Our guest article is Tips To Gain A Winning Advantage In Life by Chris Green. Chris is the author of the new acclaimed book "Conquering Fear", the complete guide to overcoming fear and attracting more success, prosperity and happiness into your life.

2) HOW FLEXIBLE ARE YOU?

People who want to achieve success in their lives and are committed to self improvement know the value of setting goals and making workable plans for their realisation. These are essential steps to success and in our last few issues we??™ve talked about many things that we can do to help us determine our goals and to set about achieving them.

Perseverance and determination are essentials for success. You need to have a burning desire to reach your goals and a total resolve that you will not be denied. You must be committed to achieving your goals, constantly hold a clear picture in your mind of you goals as already achieved, and be determined that you will succeed. And of course, you must take consistant action towards you goals.

But an equally important success skill is the ability to make adjustments, to change your plans and goals, or even abandon them completely if necessary. We need to be flexible and prepared to adapt to changing circumstances.

One thing we can be sure of is that things rarely go according to plan. Even with the best planning, the unexpected can and probably will happen. Things beyond our control can make our plans unworkable. Or our plans may not be working because they are flawed.

It??™s easy to become so involved and attached to our goals and plans that we may not even be aware this is happening. Sometimes, if we are, even in the back of our mind, aware, we may not be prepared to accept that we aren??™t getting the expected results. Sometimes pride can override rationality and common sense.

It??™s important to be able to step back and take an impartial view of our progress. We need to be able to take a reality check to see how we are doing and, as much as possible, to gauge our results. Achieving results can take a long time, often much longer than expected and it??™s rarely realistic to expect overnight results.

It??™s important to take as balanced and realistic a view as possible. It often won??™t help to just keep trying different things or to be constantly changing direction.

Try to objectively decide if you??™ve given a course of action a fair try before jumping to the conclusions that things aren??™t working out. It may just be that you underestimated the time things would take, or perhaps some adjustments are required.

You may have to try a different route or plan to get the results you??™re looking for, or maybe you need to alter your expectations.

Perhaps your plans need to be delayed to allow you to learn new skills that you hadn??™t anticipated, and should be put on hold rather than abandoned. Maybe you had left out some important steps from your plans.

It??™s been said that actually achieving a major goal is nowhere near as important as becoming the person that you become on the way to reaching the goal. Learning the necessary skills and becoming the person you need to be to reach any important goal will inevitably take some people more time than others. Patience is required. Some people??™s plans and actions will be more effective than others and this is another reason why flexibility is important.

Sometimes goals that we thought were important to us aren??™t achieved for good reasons. Perhaps they weren??™t congruent with our values and achieving them would have caused unforeseen personal conflict, or perhaps we had underestimated the impact on our family and friends. In this case we need to think again about our values and goals and what is most important to us.

Inevitably, we will all make mistakes along the way and not everything will work out. But this is not failure or defeat. The only time we can fail or be defeated is if we decide that we are defeated or have failed - and give up.

5 Tips To Gain A Winning Advantage In Life

- by Chris Green

Do you wish you could live your dream life? Here??™s 5 top tips to help turn your dream into reality??¦

1. Invest in your dream. This will mean investing time to develop the necessary skills and investing money to develop skills - equipment, books, courses, seminars - to take you closer to your goals. These are investments in yourself ??“ in your dream and are never wasted. My best friend is currently studying to be a commercial pilot. The process will cost him around FIFTY THOUSAND dollars. Some investment. His response: ???I??™m worth it.??? Are you?

2. Accept and embrace change. Change terrifies many people mainly because change is viewed as a threat to security. I??™m sure you know what a comfort zone is? It??™s why so many resist change. However, in resisting change, 2 threats are posed. First, you miss an opportunity to broaden your horizons. An opportunity to grow has been presented. You could learn new skills, open yourself up to new experiences and develop your character. If you are to grow as an individual, embracing change is vital because change means growth. Secondly, in resisting change, you wrap yourself up in a cocoon and life passes you by. You don??™t grow, life stays the same and in doing so, you become stale. This can lead to great unhappiness as the years pass by. Do you want to look back on a safe, but ultimately stale, life?

3. In pursuing your dream, accept that risk is going to be a part of the whole process. Nothing worthwhile has ever been achieved without exposure to risk. Yes, you may risk losing money, yes you may risk working long hours for little or no reward, yes you may risk ridicule, disapproval, rejection and of course, failure. But risk is EXCITING. Replace risk with a guarantee of certain success, without challenge, pain, or danger and well, how boring do you want your life to be? Think of this: How rewarding is it to achieve something worthwhile having overcome difficulties and negative people, and say: ???I??™ve done it!??? Some feeling, yes? If you??™re frightened of taking even the smallest of risks, you??™re allowing your imagination to set boundaries on the happiness you can gain from life. But it will only do this if you let it.

4. This leads me nicely into one of the biggest fears we all share: The fear of failure. But how bad is failure? If you wrap yourself up in a cocoon, hiding away from life in the pursuit of security, then you??™re guaranteed to fail because you haven??™t done anything. Conversely, if you get out there and give it a go, well sure, you??™re going to experience failure. There isn??™t one single achievement in human history that didn??™t involve failure ??“ even a number of failures ??“ before success came. Failure brings us the opportunity to learn. It??™s been said many times: ???the only true failure is to quit??? and that is the bottom line. Whatever happens to you, learn from it. Treat every experience as a stepping stone to your ultimate aims and failure will act as a driving force and not a brick wall.

5. Finally, have the courage to be the person you want to be. You won??™t be a unique, fulfilled, joyously happy person living your dream if you decide to do what everybody else is doing. Be you. It doesn??™t matter how crazy, mad, dangerous or wacky your dream is. It is YOUR dream. It is YOUR life. YOU and only YOU can live it your way. Just because 2 million people do the same thing, it doesn??™t make it right FOR YOU. And doing things just because everybody else does them means we??™re more akin to sheep than unique individuals who express ourselves through our dreams. Why be like everybody else when you can be UNIQUELY YOU? You pass this way but once. You have a blank canvas on which to paint your life. Why paint the same picture everybody else is painting when you can paint your own unique masterpiece?

You now have 5 ways to take you closer to your dreams. Why not give it your best shot? After all, what else have you got planned for the rest of your life?

To YOUR future.

4) DID YOU KNOW?

LET'S TALK ABOUT THE WEATHER

We're not the only ones talking about the weather. In fact, the weather is the most watched programme on television. And amongst news readers, weather.com is the third most visited site.

As long ago as the 5th century BC the Greeks sent out weather forecasts to their sailors. They also posted weather forecasts, called peg calendars, on important buildings. It proved to be very popular.

Aristotle wrote the first book on weather, Meteorologica, in 350 BC. It remained the standard textbook on weather for almost 2,000 years.

Today, weather services send out 4 million forecasts a year. Almost a million forecasts are sent to airlines. How accurate are they? One-day forecasts are accurate more than 75% of the time.
