A new series of f-ree, dynamically mapped and customizable sound-seeing tours of Philadelphia are available. The SoundAboutPhilly tours concentrate on lesser-known city experiences and combine tales, fun facts and lively music to tell the area's story. Spontaneous and intimate in tone, the tours feature distinctive and varied voices of experts, boutique owners, chefs, musicians and everyday, in- the-know Philadelphians.
The first three tours are: "History Unplugged," 300 years of non-textbook American history; "Flavorhoods," a look at dining in different ethnic neighborhoods; and "My Philly," recommendations from Philadelphians accents and all. Each tour introduces the sounds, history and culture of Philadelphia. Even when not in town, you can soak up Philly while walking the dog or driving to work. You'll learn which Old City boutique hosts bridal showers, what not to say when ordering at a Port Richmond pizza joint and which room in City Tavern was destroyed by rowdy Founding Fathers as they planned the Revolution.
The remaining four tours will be unveiled about once a month and will feature the African American experience in Philadelphia, undertold tales of the Historic District, the inside scoop on classic Philly spots and a look at the city's religious history.
With the dynamic mapping capabilities, the web site integrates the audio with Google Maps to customize a map that matches your selected tour and prints it out so you can take it with you as explore the city.
The web site will grow over time with oral information about the city and region, where downloadable tours (beyond the original seven) will live in the future. As Philadelphia becomes increasingly wireless, the audio tours will be accessible to anyone with a wireless Internet connection in Philadelphia.
At the web site, you can listen to any tour directly, download a tour or specific segment to iTunes or other audio players or sign up for an RSS feed to receive a new tour each time one is uploaded.

Stinging Insects
|
Insects and snakes are important to the balance of nature. However, more people die from insect bites than from snake bites and most insect bites can be prevented.
The California Poison Control System is a fast, easy way to get information about poison-related concerns. While many insects can bite or sting, most are more bothersome than dangerous. But how do you know which is which?
Bites from fleas, mosquitoes and the common housefly can cause pain, itching and swelling at the site, an unpleasant experience but not necessarily dangerous, unless an infection occurs.
Some bites and stings from aggressive insects such as Africanized honey bees ("killer" bees), West Nile virus-carrying mosquitoes, black widow spiders, fire ants, and poisonous snakes can be uncomfortable or painful. However, when treated promptly, they are rarely fatal.
The California Poison Control System (CPCS) is available (800/222-1222) 24 hours a day, seven days a week to answer questions about bites and stings and questions relating to treatment.
Unseasonably warm and wet weather increases the insect population. The following tips are to keep everyone, particularly children, safe.
Do not leave food, drinks or garbage out and uncovered. Bees and wasps are attracted to the smell of fruit juice, soda, leather, perspiration and rotting food.
Remove standing water where mosquitoes may breed. At dusk wear long sleeves and pants and apply a repellent with DEET.
Avoid wearing perfumes and floral scents so you don't smell like a flower.
Avoid wearing bright floral patterned clothes so you don't look like a flower.
Do not walk barefoot.
Do not plant shrubs or flowers that attract bees, such as star jasmine or bottlebrush, next to swimming pools, decks or patios.
Be careful where spiders live, such as woodpiles, garages and other dark places. Carefully remove any spider webs you may see.
Shake all shoes, clothing, towels and bedding that are sitting around as insects and scorpions may crawl into the folds to hide.
Run from swarming bees.
Call a professional bee removal company to remove a hive of any kind.
If extremely allergic to bee or wasp stings, wear a Medic-Alert bracelet and ask a physician about prescribing an emergency bee-sting kit to have on hand.
Snakes, even rattlesnakes, are not naturally aggressive, so do nothing to annoy one.
If you or your child is bitten by a snake, or react strongly to an insect bite, go to an emergency room for treatment.
If your child is bitten or stung, call the California Poison Control System. They can answer any questions, any time. Just talk intelligently and calmly.
If breathing difficulties, swallowing difficulties or body-wide itching develop, call 9-1-1 immediately. Otherwise, wash the bite or sting area with soap and water to help prevent infection.
If stung or bitten on fingers or hand, remove any rings or jewelry in case of swelling. Your local pharmacist can recommend the best over-the-counter medications to help treat insect and spider bites.

Electronic in Edinburgh
|
Edinburgh Airport in Scotland began testing a new text service to allow passengers to make travel inquiries and get speedy answers.
Travelers can use their cell phone and send a question by text message to 64BAA (64222).
Questions can relate to transportation connections, hotel information or other travel issues. Sample questions: "What is the closest hotel to Edinburgh Airport?" or "What is the quickest bus service from Edinburgh city center to the airport?".
Questions will be received by a team of "textperts" who will send a quick response, in a matter of minutes, direct to travelers' phones. The cost for each question is ?1 (about $1.87), with the charge being reverse billed.
The service, provided by 82ASK, is known for fielding a wider range of queries from beer recommendations to pick-up lines that work.

| New EU Security Rules for Air Passengers |
|
The European Union approved new airline security rules that will restrict the amount of liquid allowed onboard planes, limit the size of cabin baggage, require passengers to remove coats at security checkpoints and other similar measures.
The EU Regulatory Committee for Civil Aviation Security, representing all 25 member states, approved the measures, proposed by the European Commission, to address the new threat of liquid explosives.
The new rules will come into effect in early November, after being officially published by the European Commission. The new carry-on luggage size rules will come into force later to allow tour operators time to prepare.
The proposed new rules:
Limit the amount of liquids allowed to be carried by each passenger to 100 ml per container.
Require containers fit in one transparent re-sealable plastic bag of a maximum size of one liter.
Require passengers to present the plastic bag at security checkpoints.
Limit cabin baggage to 56 cm x 45 cm x 25 cm (22 inches x 17.7 inches x 9.8 inches), with possible exemptions e.g. musical instruments.
Require passengers to remove coats and jackets at security checkpoints.
Require laptops and large electrical items to be removed from bags at security checkpoints.
The new rules will still allow passengers to buy, under certain conditions, larger quantities of liquids at airport shops beyond the point where boarding passes are controlled.
