Vaccine Hope for Travel Diarrhea
|
A single pill may stop your tummy troubles when you go abroad. Microscience, a British company, is testing a potential vaccine for diarrhea. Laboratory tests show that it can protect against enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), a bacterium which causes most cases of travelers' diarrhea. The vaccine could benefit people who visit Africa, Southeast Asia and the Indian sub-continent, Central and South America and the Caribbean. More than half of people who travel to countries in those regions suffer at least one bout of diarrhea during their stay.
Experts say it is unlikely to benefit people living in these countries because it protects against one of many pathogens that can cause diarrhea. A vaccine for diarrhea exists. However, people need to take two doses to gain protection. This latest vaccine is effective in one dose, according to the scientists behind it. While the vaccine is in liquid form, it could be made available in pill form in the future.
This vaccine may protect against what is known as acute watery diarrhea. This can last for up to 14 days and can include vomiting and fever. It causes dehydration, which if left untreated, can cause death.

Taos, New Mexico -- Art at its Heart

| Taos, New Mexico is a place for convergence and art seems to be at the heart of the community. Home to about 6,000 people, Native American, Spanish, and Anglo cultures easily mix here, like chiles, cilantro and tomatoes in a salsa.
About 140 miles north of Albuquerque, Taos sits on a high and wide mesa at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in northern New Mexico. About 7,000 feet above sea level, Taos is near imposing 13,000-foot Wheeler Peak, the highest crest in New Mexico.
Taos thrives on art. The Tiwa people of Pueblo de Taos, who call themselves the people of the red willows, were some of the earliest artists. They made elegant pottery for hundreds of years before the Spanish arrived in the 1600s. Some theorize that the glistening mica in the adobe walls led the Spanish conquistadors, who encountered this settlement in 1450, to think they discovered one of the

Fine, contemporary artists on the pueblo combine Indian tradition with modern artistic expression.
Taos Pueblo has been a center of modern Native-American culture since the 17th century. The only living Native American community designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and a National Historic Landmark, the multi-storied adobe buildings have been continuously inhabited for more than 1000 years. Located in the valley of a small tributary of the Rio Grande River, the houses and ceremonial centers are derived from the pre-historic Anasazi tribes. Pueblo de Taos is the best preserved of the pueblos north of the Mexican border.
Still an active community, you can tour the pueblo, which is generally open to visitors daily. The pueblo closes for tribal rituals and for about 10 weeks in late winter to early spring. Admission to the pueblo includes a guided tour and the opportunity to purchase authentic Indian goods, including pottery, jewelry, and homemade breads.
Taos as a modern artist colony began because of an accident: a broken carriage wheel. In 1896, Ernest L. Blumenschein and Bert G. Phillips, two young American artists, were touring the Southwest to work on illustrations. In northern New Mexico their surrey caught in a rut and broke one of the wagon wheels. As luck would have it, the nearest blacksmith was in Taos, 20 miles away. Blumenschein lost a coin toss and headed t

Blumenschein stayed a few months, but returned frequently. Both told artists friends about the beauty of Taos and many came. In July 1915, Blumenschein, Phillips, and four others founded the Taos Society of Artists. Blumenschein and his artist wife settled in Taos permanently in 1919.
In a city with more artists per capita than Paris, the history, art and culture of Taos is preserved in unique local museums and the Taos pueblo.
The Blumenschen House and Museum - in the 1797 structure the Blumenscheins bought when they settled in Taos, it??™s maintained more or less the way the Blumenscheins left it. It gives you an idea of life in Taos in the 1920s. Featured are the works of both Blumenscheins, their daughter and some of the other members of the Taos Society of Artists.
Harwood Museum of Art - Operated by the University of New Mexico, the Harwood features paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture and photography by artists from Taos and the region. As the second oldest museum in the state, the collection includes Taos Moderns, a post-WW

Fechin completely reconstructed the interior of his Taos adobe home, adding distinctly Russian wood carvings and creating one of the most unusual and beautiful Taos homes open to the public. The furniture, doors, windows, corbels and beams were all crafted by Fechin's hand.
Millicent Rogers Museum. Outside of Taos in the house of a nationally recognized patron of the arts who lived in Taos from 1947 to 1953, the core exhibition is Millicent Rogers??™ collection of Southwest Native American and Hispanic art, including jewelry and pottery.
The La Hacienda de los Martinez -- One of the few northern New Mexico style, late Spanish Colonial period "Great Houses" in the American Southwest, the 1804 adobe fortress with massive walls was the home of a prominent early 19th century trader. The hacienda was the end of the Camino Real (royal road) which connected northern New Mexico to Mexico City. The hacienda's 21 rooms surrounding two courtyards provide a rare glimpse of rugged frontier life in the early 1800s.
Kit Carson Home & Museum -- Carson purchased the large adobe house in 1843 as a wedding present for his bride. The house was their permanent home until their deaths in 1868. The museum contains a portion of Carson's original home. Artifacts and exhibits illustrate Carson??™s life story, his family and the character of frontier life in Taos. Other exhibits depict the importance of the Native American and Hispanic cultures in the history of northern New Mexico.

The downtown historic town plaza, the original center for trade and gossip through the centuries, is still the heart of town. Best explored on foot, shops and galleries are now housed in the former mercantiles that circle three sides of the plaza. Some are souvenir shops with some artwork; some are extensions of an artist??™s studio; and some are serious galleries bearing the works of recognized artists. Artwork spans the spectrum: you??™ll find paintings, sculpture, photography, pottery and fiber arts. There is no particular Taos style or school now so there are works of every imaginable kind, including Native American,
representational, and abstract.
In warmer weather, the plaza is the gathering spot for fairs, festivals and cultural events.
Kit Carson Road marks the northern edge of Taos Plaza. Galleries, craft shops, bed and breakfast inns and the low-slung adobe Kit Carson Home and Museum all can be found here. Many of the town??™s older structures call this stretch of original Taos home. Neighboring Bent Street combines an Old West feeling with upscale shopping and still more art galleries.
Don??™t think Taos is just about art and museums. It??™s a four-season destination with plenty of opportunities for skiing, snow-mobiling, white water rafting, golf, and other outdoor activities.
