Prepare for Outdoor Winter Activity -- When snow, ice and frigid weather blast into town, watch out, says the American Chiropractic Association (ACA). Winter recreational activities can pose problems when your body is not in condition. Winter sports like skating and skiing can cause painful muscle spasms, strains or tears if you're not in shape.
Walking outside in the freezing weather without layers of warm clothing can intensify older joint problems and cause a great deal of pain. Preparation for an outdoor winter activity, including conditioning the areas of the body that are most vulnerable, can help avoid injury and costly health care bills.
"Warming up is essential," says ACA-sponsored Olympic speedskater Derek Parra, gold medal winner in the 1500 meters at the World Cup event in the Netherlands. "It's better to shorten the length of your workout and keep a good warm-up than to skip the warm-up and dive right into the workout. Skipping your warm-up is the best way to get hurt." Parra and the ACA suggest you start with light aerobic activity (jogging, biking, fast walking), for about 7-10 minutes. Then follow these tips to help you fight back the winter weather:
Skiing -- do 10 to 15 squats. Stand with your legs a shoulder's width apart, knees aligned over your feet. Slowly lower your buttocks as you bend your knees over your feet. Stand up straight again.
Skating -- do several lunges. Take a moderately advanced step with one foot. Let your back knee come down to the floor while keeping your shoulders in position over your hips. Repeat the process with your other foot.
Sledding/tobogganing -- do knee-to-chest stretches to fight compression injuries caused by repetitive bouncing over the snow. Either sitting or lying on your back, pull your knees to your chest and hold for up to 30 seconds.
Don't forget cool-down stretching for all of these sports -- At the bottom of the sledding hill, before trudging back up, do more knees-to-chest stretches, or repetitive squatting movements to restore flexibility.
Stop if you feel chest pain, or get really tired or have shortness of breath. You may need immediate professional help.
After any of these activities, if you are sore, apply ice to the affected area for 20 minutes, then take it off for a couple of hours. Repeat a couple of times each day over the next day or two. If you continue to feel soreness, pain or strain after following these tips, it may be time to visit a doctor.

New Aircraft Disinfectant -- EnviroSystems, Inc., a manufacturer of people-safe, environmentally friendly infection control products, announced that JetBlue Airways will be the first airline to use EcoTru(R), the only disinfectant cleaner currently approved for use on aircraft. The only EPA-registered Tox. Category IV disinfectant on the market, EcoTru(R) kills tuberculosis and a wide spectrum of viruses, bacteria and fungi in 5 to 10 minutes without any of the hazards posed by other categories of disinfectants. The product needs no warning labels. It does not irritate eyes and can be absorbed through the skin, inhaled or swallowed without harmful effects. It is the only hospital-grade disinfectant that has passed the AMS-1453 specification for civilian and military aircraft. This battery of 24 tests screens out substances that corrode plastics, rubber, painted surfaces and metals used to manufacture aircraft. Because no other disinfectant has passed this specification, none has previously been used by the airlines.

Hotel Goofs and Gaffes -- Bad beds, slow room service and interminably long check-in lines are just three pet peeves plaguing the hotel industry according to Sheraton Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. Here are the Big 10 gaffes (compiled by Sheraton) that drive hotel guests nuts.
"BIG 10" Hotel Complaints
1. Wrong Room (wrong size bed, wrong view, smoking/non smoking room)
2. Room Not Clean
3. Bad Bed (hard mattress, poor quality, not enough pillows, etc)
4. Missing Wake-up Call
5. Missing Bathroom Amenities
6. Slow Room Service/Restaurant/Bar Service
7. Uncontrollable Noise (train running, garbage truck)
8. Billing Errors (incorrect posting of charges to bill)
9. Slow Check-In
10. Room not Ready
To remedy the problem, Sheraton offers a service promise, that it will fix any defect on the spot when possible, but also compensate guests for any problem they encounter. Compensation can be guest points, credits, amenities, gift certificates or even cash back. Here's how the Sheraton Promise works:
For inconveniences: missing bath amenities, slow check in, or billing problems you will receive an apology plus a $15 value or 500 Starwood Preferred Guest points.
A large problem such as a dirty room, problems with the heating or controllable noise will result in an apology plus a $25-$75 value (based on the hotel's average daily rate). Compensation option include a credit toward the stay, a gift certificate for a future stay, spa services or guest points.
Slow room service, no wake up call, uncontrollable noise, poor food, a bad bed or other large problems that cannot be fixed will result in an apology plus credit for a free room night or meal; or a gift certificate good for one night at another Sheraton; or guest points.

Obese Passenger Injury Award -- A passenger on a Virgin Atlantic flight has won a £13,000 ($20,000) award after being injured by an obese woman in the next seat.
Barbara Hewson, from Wales, was traveling economy class to Los Angeles, when the incident happened. She suffered injuries to her chest, torn leg muscles and developed sciatica after being crushed by the oversized passenger.
The 11-hour flight started at London's Heathrow Airport and Ms Hewson said she complained to the cabin crew about the problem. The woman next to her was so large she had to raise the arm rest to fit into the seat.
Because the flight was full there was no alternative seat and the woman's arm rested on Hewson's chest for much of the journey. Hewson is only 4 feet 11 inches tall. When the flight arrived in Los Angeles Hewson was admitted to hospital.
Hewson's complaints to Virgin have taken more than 18 months to settle. After refusing two smaller offers, Hewson finally accepted the GBP£13,000 plus medical expenses and legal fees.
