He was visited by his jailer's daughter and sent her a note signed "your Valentine". This was the first Valentine greeting sent in the third century.

Commercial greeting cards appeared in the United Kingdom in the 18th century. We mail almost as many Valentine's Day greeting cards as Christmas cards.
