Energy Saving Ideas
1. Replace light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs – savings $25-65 a year because they last 13 times longer.
2. Bring your own stainless-steel container for take-out coffee, tea or water.
3. Using your dishwasher with full loads of dishes saves water.
a. Only scrape (and not rinse) your dishes to save more water.
b. Older dishwaters may require rinsing, but fill a bowl with water and soap and keep the faucet turned off.
4. Turn off the water when you’re brushing your teeth – saves 10 gal. a day
5. Purchase green cleaning products or make your own to reduce harmful chemicals.
6. Bring your own cloth or reusable bags to the grocery store.

Chocolate Better Than Kisses
Twenty volunteers ate 1 piece of dark chocolate while wearing heart monitors and electrodes attached to their heads. They were instructed not to chew the chocolate and to indicate when it began to melt. The 10 couples then kissed normally.

“The study found that at the point chocolate melts in the mouth, all areas of the brain are stimulated far more intensely and for longer than from from kissing. … The study found chocolate also made the heart beat faster.”
While kissing heart rates increased, but not for as long as the chocolate stimulation, which effected all areas of the brain.

The study was conducted by a British psychologist who runs a private research company.

Speaking of addictions …
Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. in Vermont is working to help preserve chimpanzee habitat in Africa. The coffee maker unveiled a new coffee flavor on Monday called Gombe Reserve.
The company is working with the Jane Goodall Institute, a worldwide nonprofit known for protecting chimpanzees. Jane Goodall is famous for her work with chimpanzees in Tanzania. "The idea is to create higher income through coffee production so they don't have to turn to forestry, for example, cutting down native trees to sell for building materials or firewood," Bolger said.

The God Bank - Racking up Points I have a good-hearted friend who means well, but isn’t reliable to call or visit when she says she will. Years ago, I learned that it was just her way and accepted it. Last year, when I didn’t expect her to show up for a holiday dinner she did, and I didn’t really cook enough food, but we made the best of it. Not being a perfect individual myself, I had enough of this behavior which I considered to be disrespectful of my time. Of course, there are other events that occurred, which I will not go into.

Since we are encouraged by our faiths and/or spirituality to do good deeds for others, I was recently asked: “If I visit this woman in a nursing home for the holiday, will God count that?”

Pets, Food and Gifts
Pet owners are flocking to natural and organic stores or preparing meals for their pets themselves to avoid purchasing tainted pet food. Vets warn that nutritional values need to be considered and that if this is your choice, contact your vet or the American College of Veterinary Nutrition.

My three male cats are healthy with purchases of cat food not on the recall list, although I am watching them closely for any symptoms.
