Believe it or not, chocolate is becoming endangered because of higher costs of cacao beans. The U.S. chocolate industry is asking the FDA for approval to use vegetable fat substitutes in place of cocoa butter, and to use milk substitutes in the place of nutritionally superior milk.  These changes will have adverse effects on the taste and nutritional quality of chocolate.

Cocoa is a rich source of flavonoids, which appear to have potent antioxidant activity. The cocoa and chocolate industry has the opportunity to market these benefits to health-conscious consumers. Source: Chocolate Manufacturer’s Association.

Breast Cancer Fundraising

• Leading research at the flagship Avon Center at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center at Northwestern University Medical Center

• Support of 5 public or community-based hospitals to provide breast care services to uninsured, underserved, and minority women
• Support of 13 community-based organizations
• Direct financial support to more than 750 low-income women undergoing breast cancer care

Mother’s Day Origins In the United States, Mother's Day was first suggested in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe (who wrote the words to the Battle hymn of the Republic), as a day dedicated to peace. Ms. Howe organized annual Mother's Day meetings in Boston, MA.

In 1907, Ana Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day. Ms. Jarvis persuaded her mother's church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the second anniversary of her mother's death, the 2nd Sunday of May. By the next year, Mother's Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia.
