Hershey’s Chocolate
It’s with mixed feelings, (and after purchasing 2 Hershey bars), that I relay the following 2 items:

1. Hershey is closing a plant closing in Smith Falls (Eastern Ontario) and Loyalist College and convenience stories are boycotting all Hershey’s products.

2. Hersheypark, dedicated in 1907 by Milton S. Hershey, is celebrating its centennial. On May 26, the featured event is the opening of The Boardwalk at Hersheypark, a $21 million expansion that combines three existing water rides with five new water-themed attractions.

“The Boardwalk's centerpiece is the East Coast Waterworks, a 70-foot tall steel waterplay structure billed as the world's largest. It uses more than 54,000 gallons of water and features seven slides, two crawl tunnels and two large tipping buckets at the top that send water cascading onto bathers below.
Other elements include a kiddie pool called Sandcastle Cove, a Coastline Plunge water slide complex, and Waverider, a ride that allows two people to surf on machine-made waves.”

What’s in a Name?
If you’re an individual producing a product, the name can’t be related to a similar product, especially if it’s manufactured by a corporate giant. One San Jose resident is learning this the hard way. Not only is he going to jail for using pot (an illegal substance) in candy and drinks, he named the items “Stoney Rancher, Rasta Reese's and Keef Kat” and used packaging similar to Hershey’s products.
Hershey’s has filed suit for trademark infringement, trademark dilution and unfair competition. The company is seeking $100,000 in damages.

Are Chocolate Bubbles Low Fat?
Abington, PA-based Bubble Chocolate has launched three bars (milk chocolate, dark chocolate and coffee milk chocolate) it describes as "Bubbles wrapped in chocolate." Meanwhile, Hershey's has its soon-to-be-released Reese's Whipps, which it bills as having fewer calories thanks to all the air pumped into it.

Whipping or blowing air into chocolate isn't revolutionary. The delicate, bubbly Aero bar has been popular in Europe for years. But now Americans can get in on bars that seem to effervesce as they quickly melt and disappear in your mouth.

2 Chocolate Giants Partner Up:
Hershey and Barry Callebaut, have teamed up for a landmark partnership which will see the Swiss cocoa producer providing the raw material for Hershey's chocolate products and expanding facilities in South America.

In terms of production, Barry Callebaut has signed up to provide Hershey with at least 80,000 tons of chocolate and chocolate products each year. In addition, the Swiss company will lease some of Hershey's facilities in the U.S. and transfer chocolate-making machinery into Hershey-owned plants.

Hershey, which has been advancing into more trend-driven niches such as premium, dark and ethically-sourced chocolate, is set to benefit from Barry Callebaut's reputation as a responsible producer as well as its experience in the manufacture of luxury chocolate items.
