2. Mardi Gras “Fat Tuesday”
Mardi Gras is celebrated with beads, costumes, parades and partying in New Orleans and elsewhere. The first Mardi Gras parade was held in the early 1700s in Mobile, Alabama, when it was still under French rule.

Before Hurricane Katrina, 70 parades were held in New Orleans two weeks before Lent and Ash Wednesday. Each parade has a different theme, elects a King & Queen, volunteers design floats and there are bands, music and other performers.
The official colors of Mardi Gras are purple (justice), gold (power) and green (faith) and these colors are used as different sugars for the King Cake, traditionally made in New Orleans to celebrate Mardi Gras.

Baking Soda: several home uses Fights odors in the fridge.
Removes tape residue: make a thick paste of baking soda and water. Rub the paste onto bits of tape stuck to windows, then wipe clean.
Douse flames: keep a box of baking soda in your workshop or kitchen to sprinkle on a fire if one breaks out.
Zap roaches: set out a shallow dish or bowl containing equal parts sugar and baking soda. Roaches are attracted to the sugar, but the mixture is deadly to them.
Spot-clean a rug: sprinkle baking soda on greasy spots and let sit for about an hour. Scrub gently with a damp sponge or brush, then vacuum to remove any leftover grime.
Absorb moisture - keep an open box of baking soda in your tool cabinet to fend off moisture that could rust saws or other equipment.
Keep drains clear: once a week, pour a cup of baking soda and a cup of vinegar down your kitchen sink. It'll help keep your pipes clog-free.
Clean a shower door: pour some baking soda on a damp sponge, wipe the door, and rinse with warm water.
Uncrust your grill: sprinkle baking soda directly on an indoor or outdoor grill. Let sit overnight, then slough off the grime with a wire brush and warm water.
Scrub your paws: rubbing your hands with warm water and a palmful of baking soda will remove stubborn odors.
Banish book odors: seal musty-smelling books for a few weeks in a plastic bag with baking soda sprinkled inside to eliminate mildew and odors.

A Beetle named orbisononorum
A new species of beetle that looks like it’s wearing a tuxedo has been named in honor of the late rock 'n' roll legend Roy Orbison and his widow Barbara.
Entomologist Quentin Wheeler of Arizona State University announced the discovery and naming of the beetle, now dubbed Orectochilus orbisonorum, during a Roy Orbison Tribute Concert on Jan. 25.

The ending of the species name, "orum," denotes it was named after a couple. If the beetle were just named after Roy it would end in "i," and for just Barbara, the name would end in "ae."

Called whirligigs because they swim rapidly in circles when alarmed, the beetles have "divided" eyes that can see both above and below the water. A band of material separates the eyes so that on first glance you'd think the insect were four-eyed.

Thankfully, I’m back to beading and working with glass pendants and sterling silver that I purchased last summer. I’m exploring new designs to add a few Swarovski crystals to keep prices affordable.

Keep in mind that if you need jewelry in a certain color combination, I can work with you on a design to match a particular outfit.

Happy February!
