Dear Subscriber,

Lunar Eclipse – Wednesday Night View
The last total lunar eclipse until 2010 occurs Wednesday night, with cameo appearances by Saturn and the bright star Regulus on either side of the veiled full moon. Skywatchers viewing through a telescope will have the added treat of seeing Saturn's handsome rings.

Weather permitting, the total eclipse can be seen from North and South America. People in Europe and Africa will be able to see it high in the sky before dawn on Thursday.

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the full moon passes into Earth's shadow and is blocked from the sun's rays that normally illuminate it. During an eclipse, the sun, Earth and moon line up, leaving a darkened moon visible to observers on the night side of the planet.
The moon doesn't go black because indirect sunlight still reaches it after passing through the Earth's atmosphere. Since the atmosphere filters out blue light, the indirect light that reaches the moon transforms it into a reddish or orange tinge, depending on how much dust and cloud cover are in the atmosphere at the time.

The Big Chill
Wind chills in the Midwest are below zero and -20 at night. Snow and black ice still cover the roads. Potholes are another thing to watch out for as you’re driving – some are almost large enough to swallow a small car.

Economy
Per Yahoo! News on 2/20 - The Federal Reserve on Wednesday lowered its projection for economic growth this year, because of a housing slump and credit crunch. It said it also expects higher unemployment (5.2 percent to 5.3 percent in 2008) and higher inflation (2.1-2.4%) because of higher energy costs.

NIU
Prayers and condolences go out to the Northern Illinois University family, who are mourning the loss of classmates in the senseless shooting on Valentine’s Day. Who knew that in these days one had to worry about sending a child off the college to be murdered by a madman with a shotgun? No one knows how the situation could have been avoided or why the graduate student shot and killed students.

Kudos to the police who responded quickly to the situation, and to the preparation plan that NIU had implemented since the shootings occurred at Virginia Tech to contact families and seal off the campus. Hopefully, more academic institutions will develop similar plans.

In 2008, we all face death – of students, family members and military personnel defending our country. Violence is commonplace in films, TV shows and is real in some city and country locations. As an idealist, I’d like to believe that if more of us pray for peace … eventually it can become a reality.

Peace now,
Linda Blatchford
