Does Excess Protein Turn to Fat? ? An Anatomy Lesson
by Maia Appleby, http://www.shapeupshop.com

Everyone knows that overeating leads to excess weight. This
concept comes in many flavors these days, though. Some
people think that carbohydrates are the culprit. Others
think it's sugar. Some people think that eating lots of
protein couldn't possibly make them gain weight. Hmmm...

The only way to determine the answer to this enigma is to go
inside the human body and take a look at how fat gets there
in the first place. Let's follow a bite of pepperoni pizza
and see what happens to its sugar, fat and protein. Open
wide!

The food enters your mouth:

Saliva contains enzymes that break any starch in the food
down to sugar.

This, along with any fat and water in the food, travel to
the stomach, which churns them up.

Pepsin (an enzyme that digests protein) and hydrochloric
acid further break down the food, turning it into a
substance called chyme.

The mixture enters the duodenum, (the place where the gall
bladder secretes its bile).

This bile dissolves the fat in water, thinning it out and
making it easier to absorb.

Enzymes from the pancreas enter the duodenum and further
break down the sugar, fat and protein.

Now everything is dissolved and is in fluid form, so it is
absorbed through the lining of the small bowel. Fat, sugar
and protein wave good-bye to each other and go their
separate ways.

What happens to the sugar:

It also goes directly into the blood stream, and several
different organs take the sugar they need as it passes by.

Some is stored in the liver as glycogen.

Whatever is left is converted to fat and stored in fat cells
with the excess fat above.

What happens to the fat:

First, it goes into the blood stream and travels to the
liver

The liver burns some of the fat, converts some to other
substances (one is cholesterol) and sends the rest to fat
cells, where they wait until they are needed.

What happens to the protein:

It is broken down into building blocks known as peptides.

Then, it is further broken down and it becomes amino acids.

The amino acids are absorbed through the small intestine's
lining and enter the blood stream.

From here, some of the amino acids build the body's protein
stores.

Excess amino acids are converted to fats and sugars and
follow the paths described above.

This is such a simple concept, but many people still believe
that consuming lots and lots of protein will put muscle on
their bones. Don't be fooled by this notion! Even excess
protein turns to fat.

Here is a picturesque illustration of the real cause of
weight gain. Eating too much food! Dietary fat is obviously
the substance most often stored as fat in the ends, but no
matter what you eat, your body takes whatever it can't use
and sends it to fat cells. ? If you don't burn it off or
expel it, it hangs around in your fat cells, no matter what
it consists of.

The South Beach Diet

I would love to recommend this book again in this months
ezine. The reason is with all the hype on low carb and low
fat, it seems that the Aktins Diet has been chosen I
believe because it's popularity and of course it's
effectiveness.

The South Beach Diet has been on TV and been said to be
better than the Aktins Diet and after reading and applying
myself to it I can see why. I will touch more on that later.

Low Carb?

Let's get back to the fact that the Aktins Diet seems to be
making a big splash with the fast food chain. I have to say
I am not surprised, however is it a healthier way to eat?
Yes it is and it seems that there is a new awakening to
eating low carb and low fat. Did I say low fat? So why is
the fast food chain leaving out the fat content and only
advertising low carb? I am still wondering about that
question. Are we blinded by something that is actually low
carb in the fast food chain that we have forgotten about
the low fat? Isn't that what the Aktins diet is all about,
low carb, low fat, more protein?

One thing for sure is when I ordered myself a sub wrap I
loved the feeling of eating something from a fast food
chain that was low carb. However I was brought back to
reality when I asked the manager what the fat content was
in the wrap. I was not surprised to his answer, as it was
I don't know. So you see even though you are eating
something that is low in carbs you can still be eating the
wrong kind of FAT. Did you notice the dressing and the
cheese they put on those wraps? It doesn't mention anywhere
that it is low fat or fat free cheese & dressing? You see
they reeled you in with the low carb craze. The one thing
the Aktins diet does not teach you is eating the right kind
of carbs, the right fat and the right protein. To me this
diet is not realistic.

The South Beach Diet is a great diet and has been on TV
as being a better diet and more realistic than the Aktins
diet. This information was being told by several doctors
that compared the two diets. Yes it is similar to the
Aktins diet however in The South Beach Diet it shows what
good carbs are and good fat and includes the right kind of
protein to eat. Recipes are more realistic and the program
of food is easier to stick with. Whether or not you buy the
book in the stores or order the limited edition from
Roadale.com you will be starting a great weight loss
program that you can apply to your everyday life. That is
why I am giving this diet a thumbs up.

Coricidin HBP - Cough and Could medicine
?  ?  ?  ? Verses
?  Ephedrine/MaHaung

Both these products are good products and both have been
abused. The only difference is one is a supplement and the
other an over the counter medication.

Some teenagers and young adults, are deliberately ingesting
large amounts of Coricidin?? HBP?” for cough and Cold. It has
been said that as many as 15 tablets at one time, and they
get the stuff right off the shelf at the neighborhood
supermarket or drugstore. Authorities say a growing number
of teenagers are using over-the-counter cold medicines and
cough syrup in excessive doses as recreational drugs --
seeking what they describe as an LSD-like "high" from
dextromethorphan, a non-prescription cough suppressant, an
active ingredient of such products as Robitussin D and
Coricidin D. If you can remember, the cough suppressant
abuse has been around for sometime now. It's really nothing
new.

According to the DEA. "The abusers report a heightened
sense of perceptual awareness, altered time perception and
visual hallucinations." Most are discovering the practice on
the Internet(Teen jargon: Dxing, Robo-trippin' and tussin.)
or from friends at school. Because the medications can be
acquired legally, there is no means for tracking this kind
of abuse. However you can also aquire Ephedrine/MaHaung
legally. Take a guess which one of these products will be
banned?

The FDA is going to ban the use of Ephedrine/MaHaung a
natural supplement because of reported deaths due to abuse.
This product has been used safely for many generations and
has helped many lose weight. When taken as directed like any
kind of medication it is safe. Anything that you take
whether it be over the counter or in a supplement has to be
taken as directed and that includes vitamins. But the FDA is
not big on supplements and it would ruin the prescription
business if everyone added natural remedies to their
everyday routine. I am not saying ignore your doctor by no
means, but when you have tried everything there is and there
has been no improvement there are other alternatives that do
work. It's too bad more doctors do not use these methods
along with their practices.

I believe that if they are going to take away Ephedrine/
MaHaung then they ought to be looking harder into the real
life killers that people abuse. What about alcohol, tobacco,
and now this Coricidn HBP. I wonder who is wearing the
blinders now? Do you think for one minute they will pull the
Coricidin HBP cough and cold medication from the shelves?
I think that this will blow over and not hang on like the
information that has been so wrongly been put out over the
years about Ephedrine/MaHaung.

Next month we will give you information on the Ephedrine/
MaHaung craze. We will show you how safe and effective it is
and also on cases where people abuse the product. Let's face
it, there are so many over the counter products people abuse
that we don't even know of that have caused deaths.

This Month's Freebies
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Free Tips to try:
1. Sealed envelope - Put in the freezer for a few hours,
then slide a knife under the flap. The envelope can then be
resealed.
2. For icy door steps in freezing temperatures: get warm
water and put Dawn dishwashing liquid in it. ? Pour it all
over the steps. They won't refreeze.(wish I had known this
for the last 30 years!)
3. Whenever I purchase a box of S.O.S Pads, I immediately
take a pair of scissors and cut each pad into halves. After
years of having to throw away rusted and unused and smelly
pads, I finally decide that this would be much more
economical. And now a box of S.O.S pads last me
indefinitely! In fact, I have noticed that the scissors get
sharpened this way!
