Almost one half of low-carbohydrate dieters actually believe that cutting carbohydrates from their meals is such a magic bullet for weight loss that there is no reason to count calories too. This survey of 1,000 adults and 200 primary care physicians was conducted by RoperASW for Slim-Fast Foods Co. I have always said that you can't have your cake and eat it too. This just goes to prove that no matter what diet you are on you still need to watch what you eat and how much you eat. The crowd that loves their bacon and steak are in "calorie denial." Doctors say that attitude doesn't bode well for long-term weight loss success, calories still count. Americans are under tremendous pressure to lose the weight and fat. They are pressured by society, doctors, their health and reality. Yes, reality that one cannot live a healthy life and still eat whatever they want without suffering the consequences. As a result, people are willing to believe what defies science-the notion that cutting carbs without cutting calories will generate lasting weight loss. In reality, it is still important to control calories when following a low-carb diet or any other kind of diet. I have said this many times before and I'll say it again, it's learning what how to eat the good carbs and good fats. Some dieters say they can lose weight by cutting out the carbs without cutting calories. My answer to that is some people may not eat as many calories without counting and don't realize it. Then there's the ones on this low-carb diet who just stuff their face thinking that they will lose the weight while all the time they are eating more calories than their body can burn. It's like when they first came out with the low fat or no fat snacks and people would buy them and eat the whole package. People were actually getting fatter thinking just because it says low-fat or no fat they could eat as much as they wanted. This fact even made the news on the television. See what I mean? If you are serious about losing weight low carb diets are great but do watch the calories you are eating. I believe in The South Beach Diet, you learn to eat the right carbs and the right fats, hey you can even add on fruit! Always remember that portions do count. After awhile of doing this you will automatically know how much is too much. You will be more successful in your weight loss goals and maintaining it over the long haul when you do both. So to sum up these diet fads perhaps is safe to say, no matter what type of diet you're on, is to eat smart. Eat when you hungry and don't overeat. By chewing your food slowly you may actually eat less than those who eat fast. I should know as I use to be a fast eater and I would eat 2 plates of food, by doing this my food did not have enough time to reach my stomach and give me the full feeling I needed. I started chewing my food slower allowing it to break down the food for digesting and I wasn't able to eat as much food. I still follow The South Beach Diet and continue with its idea of losing weight. I started in the winter and as of today I have lost 25 pounds and a lot of inches. In fact I know I have lost fat and inches because I weight 143 and I wear a size 10. I have had comments that I do not look like I weight that much. I know the low-carb diets work because I was 5 pounds heavier 3 years ago before I gained my weight back and I have these bib overall shorts that I thought I looked great in for my weight. Well I tried those same bit overalls on and my oh my how baggy they are. I really had lost the fat this time and I am so glad that I found a diet like this one that is realistic and one I can stick with for the rest of my life. Research over the last 10 years has shown that the inability to forgive can lead to a host of physical and emotional problems including depression and cancer. 2. Take stock of your water intake and take it up a notch. Even in cooler weather your body, skin and organs need to stay hydrated. 3. Grapefruit juice has also been linked to a higher risk of kidney stones. One study showed that for every additional 8 ounces of grapefruit juice consumed per day, kidney stone risk increased by as much as 37%. 4. Want to get rid of age spots? Beta carotene scours your skin of free radicals. Eat plenty of mangos, spinach, carrots and squash. Also apply one heaping teaspoon of spirulina. ============================================================ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Readers Corner ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We really want your comments so send them in and we will put them this ezine along with your URL to show our appreciation. Our way of saying thank you ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Good, the Bad & the Ugly ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Learn the facts about fats..and win the battle of the good versus the bad and the ugly! Good (unsaturated) fats contain just as many calories as the bad (saturated0 and the ugly (trans fats). Good fats reduce the risk of developing heart disease by helping to reduce blood cholesterol. Bad fats can raise blood cholesterol and are found in high- fat dairy foods and in animal foods. The ugly trans fats may be even more effective than bad saturated fats at raising blood cholesterol. So all in all you should eat a diet that consists of no more than 300 mg. of cholesterol and 25 - 30 percent total fat. Of this fat 25 - 30 percent, 7 percent to 10 percent should be saturated fat, 10 percent to 15 percent should be monounsaturated and 10 percent should be polyunsaturated fat. Unsaturated fats include canola, olive, safflower and peanut oils. Polyunsaturated fats include soy, sunflower, corn, flaxseed oils and fatty fish like salmon, tuna and mackerel. Note that is have been studied that salmon that is farm raised has much higher fat than fresh salmon. It is better to eat the fresh salmon when possible. Saturated oils include palm, coconut and palm kernal oils. Many products are available that contain trans fats. Look at the list of ingredients on the label. If the products contains hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils ( especially if it is the first ingredient), the product contains trans fats. Remember to always read your labels when shopping. You will be surprised by what all the good, the bad and the ugly is about in fats. Trade in the bad for the good: Replace red meats with fish. Substitute butters, margarine's and other high-fat dairy products with healthier versions like canola oil, olive, flaxseed and soybean oils. When choosing foods it is a good idea to focus on those having low, reduced and no amounts of cholesterol and fat. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Recipes of the Month ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Swedish Cabbage 1 cup low-fat yogurt 1 2 1/2 cups shredded cabbage 1/2 cup shredded carrots 1/2 cup halved seedless red grapes 1/2 cup sliced celery 1/4 cup orange juice 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon celery seeds 1 teaspoon parsley Place the yogurt in a strainer lined with cheese-cloth and allow to drain for 2 hours. In a large bowl, toss together the cabbage, carrots, grapes and celery. In a small bowl, mix the yogurt (the amount should be reduced by half), orange juice, lemon juice, celery seeds and parsley. Toss with cabbage mixture 30 times. Chill for at least one hour. Toss again and serve. Enjoy! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This Month's Freebies ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ No freebies today due to my big mess up on getting out last months ezine.
