  • Denmark: University consolidation in place

Denmark's 12 universities will be fused into three large universities and five smaller ones. The minister of science, technology and innovation, Helge Sander, finally put the last piece of the educational puzzle in place and presented the government's university consolidation plan Wednesday.

It took several months getting the plan organised, as several schools and research centres initially refused to participate. In the end, 12 universities and 13 research centres went along with the consolidation, expected to be fully implemented by 1 January 2007.

Although inclusion in the plan was intended as voluntary, leaders from many institutions felt they were forced into accepting the consolidation. 'No one's arm got twisted behind their back,' said Sander.

  • Studying in Switzerland

There are the ten cantonal universities and the two federal institutes of technology in Zurich (ETHZ) and Lausanne (EPFL). These are the university institutes, some of whose histories, particularly in the case of the cantonal universities, date back to the 15th century. The oldest university in Switzerland in Basel was founded in 1460.

Then there are the seven universities of applied sciences which have emerged since 1997 from around 70 advanced technical schools consisting of technical colleges and higher commercial comprehensive schools. In 2003 they completed their first stage of development.
Both types of institute make up a dense network of education outlets in Switzerland, offering Swiss and non-Swiss students alike high quality tertiary education opportunities.
