Author’s Bio: www.myspace.com/anthologyofpoetry Toby McCraw, a Western Kentucky University graduate, received his first international experience through a student exchange program. His journey began in Canada, Trent University, where he became friends with students from the continents of North and South America, Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia. He pursued his studies in other countries for the purpose of learning and gaining the ability to share
with his fellow classmates in the United States; the many global possibilities that exist in the field of Geography, especially human geography, a branch of geography that uses the tools of sociology and anthropology to understand the culture of societies throughout the world. “There is no better way to master and truly understand this branch of geography than to converse with people from different cultures to sincerely gain an awareness on how the activities of different groups affect their physical environments. Meeting and studying with international students granted me the opportunity to exchange and discover factual information about their culture.” Moreover, while in Canada, Toby became heavily involved in environmental studies and the philosophies that support this discipline. These studies
enhanced his consciousness about the important role that the environment plays in supporting life. From this awareness and international experience, he immediately decided that he wanted to continue traveling to many places around the world to gain a greater understanding about himself and the people who reside in different regions. “I have found throughout my travels that people from all over the world share common interests and concerns. Throughout this present state of international chaos and confusion, people still exhibit sincere love and a desire to peacefully serve humanity. When I opened my mind to this learning experience, I found that a special part of me dwelled within these people as a special part of them dwelled within me.” To gain knowledge on the language and culture of Latin
America, he continued his education internationally in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico. While in Mexico, he was not only a student, but also a teacher to local children. “I was able to increase their pronunciation in the English language as they increased my pronunciation in the Spanish language. But more importantly, they reminded me on how valuable it is to take the time out to teach the youth.” Therefore, after spending a full summer in Mexico, he decided to return to his community in Houston, Texas, to teach students the fundamentals of geography. He joined a public high school in 2001 and incorporated a unique style of teaching to promote an interesting learning environment. “Understanding that today’s students are visual learners, I present my lessons in geography by exhibiting arts and sculptures
to my class for the purpose of giving the students the opportunity to touch and witness how cultures from different regions artistically view their world. This illustration caused the students to want to learn more about the regions and the geographic concepts that are being studied.” To enhance his lessons, he continued to travel to countries such as Egypt, South Africa and Great Britain. Not to solely collect arts and sculptures but to film the traditions of certain cultures around the world. From this, students have gained an appreciation for their culture and others. Toby McCraw strongly strives to increase cultural awareness through international literature, arts, and sculptures. He has established Eb5: Everybody Feels an International Vibe Experience, an international art exhibition that
tours the city to promote and educate people on the beauty of many cultures. To learn more information, please send e-mails to: eb5arts@yahoo.com or visit www.eb5arts.com.
