Fourteenth Edition, February, 2008 Progress on To Hell in a Handbasket In my January newsletter, I announced that I signed the publishing contract for the sequel to A Real Basket Case, titled To Hell in a Handbasket. It should be released sometime in the Spring of 2009 and is set in Breckenridge, Colorado. My editor sent me the edited manuscript and a set of comments and questions in the middle of January. I spent the rest of the month reviewing her changes and making changes of my own in response to her suggestions and questions. I found out that the Breckenridge Nordic Center had built a new warming hut and changed a few of their trails since I originally researched the book in the fall of 2003 (Boy, does the publishing industry move slowly!), so that caused changes in my snowshoeing scene. Also, I asked the Undersheriff of the Summit County Sheriff's Department to review three chapters and address some technical questions I had. I turned in the edited manuscript in early February and feel pretty good about it. I also turned in ancillary materials, including back cover blurbs, the story synopsis, acknowledgements, my bio, and directions to the art department for the cover design. I had to reject the first cover for A Real Basket Case, and I?m hoping to have better luck on the cover for To Hell in a Handbasket. Keep your fingers crossed for me! Large-Print The large-print edition of A Real Basket Case was released by Wheeler Publishing in January, and I?ve been having fun watching my WorldCat numbers grow as libraries receive their large-print copies. WorldCat is the world's largest network of library content and services at worldcat.org. Authors use WorldCat to see how many libraries have copies of our books in stock, which gives us an idea of our library sales. Not all libraries participate, but enough do to make the search worthwhile. For those of you who prefer large-print or know someone who does, the ISBN-13 for the large-print edition of A Real Basket Case is: 978-1597226745. Second Winner in New Email Newsletter Subscription Contest Frank, from Colorado Springs, Colorado, was the second winner in the new version of my email newsletter subscription contest. He already owns a copy of A Real Basket Case, so he will receive two mystery books written by other authors, a hardcover and a signed ARC (Advance Review Copy). He is the sixteenth winner in my contest, and the list is slowly growing toward 1700 members. When it reaches that number, I?ll award another prize. You can help the list grow (and your chances of winning) by spreading the word to your friends! Amazon?s Breakthrough Novel Contest In October, 2007, Amazon initiated their Breakthrough Novel Award contest by soliciting 5000 unpublished novel-length manuscripts from writers. The winning manuscript will be published by Penguin with a $25,000 advance against royalties. The submittal pool was narrowed to 836 semi-finalists on January 15th. The first 5000 words of all of these manuscripts are posted at www.amazon.com/abna and are available for free download. I am one of those who made it into the semi-finalist round. You can read my entry, Virtual Death, by going to www.amazon.com/dp/B0011ZCAME . Virtual Death was the first novel-length manuscript I wrote. It has been extensively revised many times, but needless to say, it never sold. It's very different from my cozy mysteries, being a futuristic romantic suspense. Amazon is asking customers to post reviews for those entries they read and is offering prizes to reviewers for the most and highest quality reviews. By February 28th, Penguin editors will select ten finalists, then Amazon customers will choose the winning novel. I'd appreciate it very much if you could take a gander at Virtual Death this month, and if you like it, write a review. If you don't like it, that's fine, too. Just don't bother writing a review. ;) Bylines 2008 Writer's Desk Calendar I got word recently that this weekly inspirational planner put together by Bylines Magazine is out and available for purchase. I have an entry in the planner. According to the editor, Sylvia Forbes: "The cover photo is the desk of Laura Ingalls Wilder, who wrote all her books using this desk. The desk is located at the Laura Ingalls Wilder Historic Home & Museum in Mansfield, Missouri. The planner has stories by 53 writers who come from 24 US states and 5 other countries. Almost every type of writer is represented, from mystery writers to essayists, newspaper reporters to humorists, children's writers to a poet." My entry appears in the week of March 9-15, and is about how important it is to network with other writers. So, instead of sending in a photo of myself, I sent a photo of a group signing I did with fellow mystery authors Mike Befeler, Linda Berry, and Pat Stoltey. I'm looking forward to reading weekly inspirational messages from all those other writers! If you?d like to order a copy, go to www.bylinescalendar.com . Upcoming Appearances My next few appearances are listed below, and I hope to meet some of you at these gatherings. Check out my Appearances page for details on these and other appearances.
