Malice Domestic XX Conference

I had a wonderful time at the twentieth anniversary Malice Domestic conference in Arlington, VA, celebrating the fact that A Real Basket Case was one of four books nominated in the Best First Novel of 2007 category of the Agatha Awards, which are named after Agatha Christie and honor “traditional” mysteries. My book did not win the final award, but I know Hank Phillipi Ryan, whose Prime Time won, and I’m very happy for her. For photos of the conference, go to: bethgroundwater.com/Malice_Domestic_2008.html.

And for a complete write-up of my doings at the conference, read the two reports about it on my blog at: bethgroundwater.blogspot.com/

Publications

Many months ago, I submitted a short story to Anne Stuessy, editor and publisher for a new website called Sniplits. Her plan was to present short stories for sale in an audio format, for download onto MP3 devices or for listening on your computer. The website is now up and running and includes a wide variety of short fiction in many genres read by trained voice talent for only $.88 each. My story is "Covered Dish Casseroles", found under "C" under the "Stories" heading. I know many of the other authors whose stories are posted at the site, and they represent quite a pool of talent. I’m sure you’ll find something you like at: www.sniplits.com.

Also, I have yet to set up my own MySpace page, but I did guest blog on the Murder in the Grove conference blog on MySpace. My entry was about how to network at conferences such as Murder in the Grove to get the most out of them. You’ll see that article at: www.myspace.com/murderinthegrove under “Top Ten Rules for Networking as a Writer by Beth Groundwater”. From the positive comments I received on that blog entry, I decided I should post the information on my own website. You’ll find it at: bethgroundwater.com/Top_Ten_Rules.html.

Lastly, the Colorado Independent Publishers Association published an article by me in their April, 2008 Signature newsletter about "Authors, Speak at Colorado Libraries!" For those of you who are published authors, you may find it useful reading for your own promotion efforts to libraries in your state. To read the article, go to pages 6 and 7 at: cipabooks.com/archives/2007-2008/April%20Sign.web.pdf.

Media Exposure

My Agatha Award nomination for Best First Novel garnered some attention from local newspapers after my publisher sent out press releases. Patti Thorn gave me a mention in her March 19th Books column in the Rocky Mountain News, which is quoted below:

"Kudos are in order for two local authors recently notified of prestigious honors:
...
* Beth Groundwater's mystery, A Real Basket Case, has been nominated for best first novel for the Agatha Awards. If she wins, she'll be in the company of prestigious past winners including Nevada Barr and Elizabeth George. Winners will be announced April 26.”

Also, the Colorado Springs newspaper, the Gazette, ran a feature article on me and the Agatha nomination in their Life section on Monday, April 7th. A photographer came out to the house to take my photo and I met with feature writer Bill Reed. I gave him waaay more information than he needed for an article, but he managed to put together a coherent story from my ramblings. Read the article at:

Contest Winner

The eighteenth winner in my email newsletter contest is Susan from Randolph, Massachusetts, who won a selection of mystery books. Susan said, “Thanks very much! There is a lot of good summer reading ahead of me, though I probably won't be able to wait till then to start.”

What's Next?

My focus during May is on my son, who is graduating from high school and celebrating his eighteenth birthday. In June, my husband and I will be traveling in Kent, England; Nice, France; and Malaga, Spain for three weeks. So, I’m not planning any May or June appearances, and I won’t be putting out my next email newsletter until July. The next step in the publishing process for the sequel to A Real Basket Case, titled To Hell in a Handbasket, is a copy edit review. That should take place sometime late this summer. I’ve also started to outline my next novel, which I hope to start drafting this summer. No moss grows under this gal’s toes!
