Everyone ready for some cruise news? Then here
goes!

Celebrity Cruises, which last September launched
a test program on Millennium that focused on
onboard enhancements, has tweaked the initial
concept and is beginning to expand it to other
ships in the line.

The program, which originally toyed with some
100 different small-and-large items -- from
frosty towels at poolside to adding dinner
service to the Aqua Spa Cafe -- has, based on
passenger feedback, narrowed down the list.
Travelers can expect poolside sorbet service and
fee-based massage, an evening "casual dining
boulevard," featuring pasta, pizza and a new
Sushi Cafe, and "happy hours" at ship lounges
which come complete with pre-dinner hors d'
ouevres. Michael's Club, formerly Celebrity's
cigar bar, has been transformed into a piano
club. AquaSpa is extending its hours to 11 p.m.
and will hold yoga and Pilates workouts on deck
at sunset. Finally, the occasional theme-
oriented midnight buffet will be moved to
lunchtime (though Celebrity's Le Grand Buffet
one-time-per-cruise event will still occupy its
regular late evening time slot).

Currently, in addition to Millennium, the
program was installed on Mercury and is being
introduced it on Constellation. A Celebrity
spokeswoman says the line anticipates all ships
participating by July.

Meanwhile in Hawaii...A provision in a federal
spending bill that would allow Norwegian Cruise
Lines' foreign-flagged ships to bypass the Jones
Act is under progress. The law, which has now
been passed by the House of Representatives and
the Senate, as part of the Omnibus
Appropriations Act, would allow NCL,and
particularly its Norwegian Star, which is the
only ship to sail year-round weekly round trips
from Honolulu, to adhere to U.S. laws -- just as
if its ships were flagged American. The bottom
line is NCL could visit the Hawaiian Islands and
sail from a U.S. port (Honolulu) without having
to make the call at Fanning Island. This would
also eliminate the need for passports which are
currently required for U.S.citizens on this ship.

NCL which recently acquired a $2 million
incomplete hull and ship parts from a shipyard
in Mississippi -- part of a failed $187 million
plan (with $1 billion in federal loan guarantees)
to jump-start an otherwise non-existant U.S.
cruise line shipbuilding program -- had asked
for American status in that region. Those
partially built ships (and parts) have been sent
to Europe for completion. Well, it was a good
idea.

Princess Cruises has finally announced a name
for its new ship debuting April 2004. She'll be
called the Caribbean Princess. The 116,000-ton
vessel under construction at Fincantieri, Italy
will sail the Caribbean on a year-round basis.
Caribbean Princess will sail alternative weekly
Eastern and Western routes.

This ship, interestingly, is being designed for
its itinerary and will have a few Caribbean-
centric features that don't exist on other
Princess vessels plying those waters. For
instance, there will be a Caribbean-themed
alternative restaurant (in addition to Princess'
trademark Italian trattoria) and a proram called
"Dive In Movies." This involves a super-huge
cinema screen designed for outdoor showings --
so passengers can watch, poolside, or, at night,
under a moonlit sky. Sounds wonderful to me! The
Caribbean Princess launches next April 17 and
will home port in Ft. Lauderdale.

Guess that's it for news this week. Until next
week, picture that outdoor movie screen under
the stars on the Caribbean Princess. I'll bring
the popcorn. Now let's hope they can find some
wonderful romantic movie to make proper use of
the surroundings!

See you next week!
Teri
