Greetings Cruise Fans from the M.S. Oosterdam-- Welcome to a brief edition of the 7 Seas Newsletter. It's brief because we are operating at about 40-cents a minute and frankly, I don't type all that fast, so here are a few highlights about the Oosterdam. More details will follow as soon as we're back. My chief disappointment has been the over-rated Internet access. We established an Internet connection exactly ONCE from our cabin, and it was over ship phone lines and extremely slow--therefore expensive. After that fiasco, we resorted to the large and softly lit Internet Cafe where access is cheaper and easier to manage. Of course, not having my laptop here means no photos to send. Sigh. Ok. Having said that, there is nothing left to complain about. Seriously, it is a lovely ship. From the fresh orchid plant on every table up in the Lido Cafe to the dining room to the main lounge, each room is lovely and the detail is wonderful. Sure there are some of those distinct touches I could do without--like the freaky "torch" lamps in the atrium, but I like to pick on decor. Those who remember my attack on the Carnival Pride know that! The service on board is excellent. Everyone is eager to please. Just a few minor oversights--like no bathmat one day and no iced tea one evening, but that's all I can find to pick apart. Food is quite good to excellent. And for those who have experienced some "foo foo" desserts on ships that were all pretty presentation and not too tasty, well they do a chocolate cake on board that is fantastic! It could win a blue ribbon at any state fair. Cabins on board are large. Balconies are equipped with a genuine wicker arm chair and ottoman covered in a lovely navy stripe fabric. To make sure you feel completely pampered, the room stewards delivered thick plaid wool lap robes to make sitting outside more comfortable. (And we need them..but more about that later) Storage in the cabins is amazing and very flexible. The closets can take hanging clothes, or you can pop up the shelves and use them for flat storage! The ship has plenty of elevators including 4 glass ones with a lovely sea view. We never wait long for an elevator to anywhere. When she moves to the Caribbean after Europe, this ship is going to be popular! It is open, airy and huge--and yet it still feels cozy. Every port we've visited so far is filled with curious people who come down for a glimpse. Even the Crown Prince of Denmark sailed with us last night from Arhus, Denmark to Warnemunde (Rostock), Germany today! The gift shop staff is responsive and the jewelry area is filled with things to Ooooh and Aaaah over. I am doing my share. Ok. That's it for now. Until next week, smooth sailing (just like on Oosterdam!) Teri |
