Subject: 7 Seas Cruise News - September07, 2003

Greetings Cruise Fans,

Welcome to another sea-going edition of the 7 Seas Cruise News.

Tonight, we are steaming back through the Baltic scheduled to arrive in Copehagen at 7 a.m. where we will disembark and turn the Oosterdam over to a new group of lucky passengers. Overall, I have to give the ship and the cruise a big A-. The crew is terrific--friendly and efficient. The food is plentiful with lots of variety (and that chocolate cake!). I find they could season things a bit more, but given the age of some of the passengers, I think they keep the fire down intentionally.

And this itinerary is terrific! Beginning with handsome Oslo, where we visited the Viking Museum and the Resistance Museum and strolled the tree-lined streets. And took our requisite boat ride around the harbor. Next stop was Arhus, Denmark. We took a taxi to Den Gamle By (a folk museum of houses and shops from all over Denmark) then walked about 3 miles back to the ship through a delightful festival.

Next stop was Visby, Sweden. Called the island of Roses and Ruins, it had plenty of both and a walled city of narrow streets. Fairy-tale perfection.  Same with Tallinn, Estonia, the next stop. More medieval walls, narrow streets, cobblestone squares and charm!

And then there was Russia. Pat and I spent a day in Moscow on the ship's "Panoramic Moscow" shore excursion and we loved it! It is the most foreign place I've ever visited. The plane ride is a charter aboard a Russian airline. A wide-body with excellent service and cold Russian beer! Meanwhile, in St. Petersburg, shore exursions offered all sorts of entertainment--a classical evening at a palace, a folk show, a vodka museum tour, the Hermitage, Peterhof or Catherine's Palace at Pushkin. As for us, it was a quiet boat ride on the Neva River with gypsy entertainment.

Next, on to Helsinki, where another boat ride introduced us to a picture-postcard-perfect landscape of sea and pines. What a lovely place! In summer, only!! Last winter, the weather was so rough that one could WALK between St. Petersburg, Helsinki and Tallinn across the frozen Gulf of Finland.  Ouch!

And then, sunny Stockholm, where 6 hours is not enough time to see and explore. We did get to spend some quality time on the ferry to visit the amazing Vasa Museum. Here, a Swedish warship that sank on its maiden voyage (top heavy thanks to design changes insisted upon by the King) rests in splendor. It is an awesome connection with history!

If you have any questions, drop me a line. I will do a complete cruise wrap up next week (when I'm not paying by the minute!)

Until then, smooth sailing. The office reopens on 9/11/03!

Teri
