Rediscovering Balance

Editing text next to the garden while the sun burns off the morning mist now
that s a nice way to start the day. I try to work this way at least once
weekly. I grab a cup of coffee or bring a thermos, drop Samantha off at
childcare, and pull up next to the community garden here in Wilsonville. I park
in the shade, open the windows, roll my seat back and use a hardback notepad as
a makeshift desk. The peace and quiet help me hear myself think. The lack of
distractions (like e-mail and the Internet) helps me focus. And being close to
nature reminds me of what s essential and what isn t.

Balance would be at the top of my essential list, though sometimes you would
never know it. I have been known to burn the candle at both ends (as my
parents call it) and not just lately, but at various times in my life. I
