FEATURED ARTICLE: Five Golden Rules for Writers
------------------------------------------------------------
  By Lisa E. Cote

So, you've begun writing, and you're thinking of sending some
 of your work out into the world, in hopes of getting published;
or perhaps you don't intend to publish at all, but have launched
a private writing project, collecting memoirs from family members,
writing a story collection for your grandchildren. Maybe you're
a professional writer slogging it out at the computer most of the
 day.

Regardless of what sort of writer you are and how much you love
to write, there are probably days when you'd rather clean ditches
 than face another blank page.

As writers, we face common challenges; staying motivated and
confident,  avoiding "writer's block," and meeting goals (on time!)
are some of the toughest. Here is some of the best practical
advice I've come by, or discerned myself, for becoming and
remaining productive, creative, and content while traversing the
writer's path. Try implementing these "Five Golden Rules" and see
 if they work for you.

FEATURED ARTICLE: How to Create Characters Who Jump Off the Page
------------------------------------------------------------

  By Maxine Thompson

Show me your friends, and I'll tell you who you are, a special
co-worker once told me. First, let me explain what special means.
In Ebonics, we'll say, "She's a special case." Or if someone is
not dealing with a full deck, but yet are loveable, we'll say,
"She's special." So as you see, this was a "gem" spoken out of a
 "special" person's mouth.

Although, at the time, I didn't quite understand what she meant,
I now know what she was talking about is called "character."
In life, this could be a bad thing, but in fiction this is a good
thing. Nothing works better for memorable fiction than strong
characters with flaws. To get to the point, how does one create
memorable characters? Sol Stein, in his book, Stein On Writing,
points out that eccentricity is at the heart of all strong
characterizations. In short, the most effective characters in
fiction are to some degree bizarre.

 FEATURED ARTICLE: Fight the Fluff
------------------------------------------------------------

  By Robert Warren

The first and final rule of quality writing is this: what doesn't
 strengthenyour writing, weakens it.

There are no neutral words when you're trying to be persuasive -
every word must be doing real work and every sentence must be
 necessary. Don't say in two sentences what you can say in one;
don't use five words when you can use three. Don't use a five-syllable
word when an available two-syllable word means the same thing. Take
the fluff out of your writing.

Fluff is the often subtle cancer that grows - and ultimately
kills - good writing. If your writing isn't achieving the effects
you want, consider a few of the warning signs of a fluff infection:

WRITER BUDDY MEMBER & COMMUNITY NEWS
------------------------------------------------------------
 Member News
The work from two of our very own WB members will soon be hitting
 bookstore shelves near you.

Long-time WB member and romance writer, Angeldance, has a story
in the newly released anthology, "Original Sin-the Seven
Deadlies Come Home to Roost." If the story is even half as
compelling as the title of the anthology, it should be a great
 read.

The anthology is available through Ingrams or Baker and Taylor
and can be ordered at your neighborhood bookstore through their
cataloguing system. The ISBN Number of the book is 0-9701726-4-8.

It will soon also be available through Amazon.com

Also, the Mystery/Suspense winner in the 2004 ArcheBooks/MWB
Novel Contest is in final production stages before it, too, is
 ready for purchase.

"Thrips" by our very own Bob Farley (or bfdc as he is known to
his WB family and friends) is a novel about an invasion of ugly
 bugs set in Hawaii.

For more information (and a cool shot of the book cover), be
sure to visit Bob's site at: http://www.lfarley.com

Be sure to support your Writer Buddies. Visit your neighborhood
libraries and bookstores and ask them to order these books.

The Writer Buddy Gazette needs writers. We need regular monthly
features of interest to all writers and news of interest
 specifically to Writer Buddy members.

Of special interest are how-to articles on all aspects of writing.

time. In lieu of payment, all contributors and regular columnists
will have a short bio with a link to their email address and Web
site listed at the end of the story or article.

The Gazette seeks non-exclusive rights to reprint articles in this
newsletter and in the reference section of the My Writer Buddy site:
