??? Some famous October birthdays: John Keats, Pablo Picasso, Martin Luther King III, Groucho Marx, Jimmy Carter, Nat Turner, Ray Kroc, Carole Lombard, Barr Tillstrom, Freidrich Nietzsche, Noah Webster, Yo-Yo Ma, L.L. Sloan, James Cook, Martina Navratilova, Bill Dana, Sting, Thelonius Monk, Hugh Jackman, Bonnie Parker, Alfred Nobel, Ruth Gordon, Sir Christopher Wren, Julie Andrews and John Lennon.

Sponsored by A Nation Lost and Found - 1936 America Remembered by Ordinary and Extraordinary People, a book that seems amazingly relevant in today??™s troubled times.

A quote from the book from a retried schoolteacher, Josephine Williams, points out the similarities:
???A minimum of 50 people came and stayed at our seven-room home. That didn??™t include the many others that just came to eat or catch a few hours of sleep. A grocer stored part of his inventory in our basement. He was generous enough to donate food for the crowd. My mother made soup and spaghetti in large tubs on our coal-burning stove. People would come in and help themselves and Mom would keep cooking. My 16-year-old brother was busy rowing around the town in a rowboat with his buddies, looking for adventure. The radio was playing music and reporting news about the flood. People talked and laughed and even danced at times. I think that lasted a little over two to three weeks.??? (p.330)

And this observation by the co-author of the book, Frank Pierson, in his Introduction: ???Among the survivor contributors are well known names - Tom Wicker, Shirley Temple Black, and Leah Rabin, Dr. Ruth Westheimer, Nobel prize winner Glenn Seaborg and many others, whose stories and memories merge with the forgotten, to call out to us from the past and present. What is remarkable and uplifting in these stories is the way in which everyone soldiered on, never gave up. Some danced to music of denial, others grew angry and bitter, some fought, nobody seemed to give up. That was what was so remarkable - the indomitable spirit, refusal to accept despair or failure.??? (p.xix)
