SPOTLIGHT ON...Don Hastings (Dr.
Bob Hughes, As the World Turns)
Don is three years shy of celebrating
his 50th year with the show; he has played Bob Hughes since October 1960.
Don was a member of the Writers
Guild, writing As the World Turns' scripts from 1971 to 1972 under the
series' creator and head writer Irna Phillips. He also wrote for Guiding
Light. In November 1993, the National Academy of Television Arts and
Sciences honored him with the Silver Circle Award, which recognizes people
with a minimum of 25 years of achievement in the television industry. In 1998,
Don (and co-star Kathryn Hays) received the Soap Opera Digest Editor's Award.
In 2004, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy
of Television Arts and Sciences for his role on ATWT.
Don began his career at age six. He
was accompanying his older brother to a children's radio program, on which his
brother was to sing. A producer noticed that young Don could also sing. A
subsequent audition landed him a role on the radio program Coast to Coast
on a Bus. The exposure led to a part in the national company of Life
with Father in 1941. He toured for three seasons and has been acting ever
since.
Don's Broadway debut was in 1944 in I
Remember Mama. Following that, On Whitman Avenue, A Young Man's Fancy and
Summer and Smoke. He also moonlighted in radio and television. In 1949,
he turned to TV full-time, playing the Ranger on the children's program Captain
Video. Other TV work includes Studio One, Crunch and Des,
the daytime dramas A Date with Life and Modern Romances, The
Edge of Night and in 2003 in the sci-fi film Decoys, written and
directed by his son Matthew.
Don met his wife, Leslie Denniston,
on the set of ATWT. They live in New York state with their daughter
Katherine and his three children from a previous marriage. Don enjoys
traveling and golf. He is a native from Brooklyn. His birthday is April 1.
