Dear Subscribers,

Firstly, I want to apologize for the lack of activity in this e-zine lately. I
am in the process of doing a heap of re-organizing of web sites, blogs and
newsletters. As a result, I will be discontinuing this e-zine. However, I have
started a new one, Lynn Fowler Writes. It will still contain Christian Book
Reviews (probably more frequently than this one has in recent times :0) ), and
will also have, in varying combinations, devotionals, inspirational articles,
Bible studies, poems and even possibly an occasional short story. Over all, it
will be aimed to encourage you in your Christian walk.

If you would like to subscribe to it, go to http://subs.zinester.com/34216

Christian Book Reviews - Women, Leadership & the Church

                        WOMEN, LEADERSHIP & THE CHURCH
Author: Jim Reiher. Publisher: Acorn Press.
                           Reviewed by Lynn Fowler.

A great deal has been said and written over the years about the role of women
in the church and family. Unfortunately, much of the case for women has been
presented by those most affected, the women themselves. This creates its own
problems, a fact which is recognized by the author in his introduction. "When
women speak or write about women in leadership in the church or raise issues
concerning the treatment of women and suggest a need for change, they often
come up against a brick wall. Their comments can be written off with throwaway
lines like, 'Boy, does she have an axe to grind!' or 'Another feminist
Christian woman - has she got a lot of problems or what?' "

Christian Book Reviews - Unleashing the Force of Favor

                         UNLEASHING THE FORCE OF FAVOR
Author Duane Vander Klok. Publisher Chosen Books

               Reviewed by Lynn Fowler (http://lynnbfowler.com).

I must say, this book was a very pleasant surprise. I had expected something
along the "Prosperity Gospel", "use faith as a tool to get whatever you want
out of God" lines. What I found was something far more balanced.

The author begins with the principle of favor: the concept that God really does
want to bless us, and that His favor can make an extraordinary difference in
our lives. He also explains that the power of favor does not happen
automatically, but has to be "turned on", just as in a house the power of
electricity is always there, but the lights won't come on unless we flick a

Christian Book Reviews - Exiles by Michael Frost

EXILES. Living Missionally in a Post-Christian Culture.
Author Michael Frost. Publisher Hendrickson Publishers Inc.

               Reviewed by Lynn Fowler. (http://lynnbfowler.com)

When I was a very young Christian, a wise older brother in the Lord told me,
"Whatever you hear or read, you must learn to chew the meat and spit out the
bones." For me, this book had some good meat, but an unfortunately large amount
of bones.

The author begins with the premise that Christendom is dead, that it will never
rise, that it can never rise, and that it should never rise. The church, he
says, is no longer the power force in society, and he strongly suggests that we
should actually rejoice in its demise. Christians are now exiles, living in an

Christian Book Reviews - Nice Girls Don't Change the World

NICE GIRLS DON'T CHANGE THE WORLD
Author: Lynne Hybels. Published by Zondervan.

A small hardback - just 96 pages of widely spaced print, interspersed with
pictures - this will not take long to read. However, it is likely to speak
strongly to women who have found themselves in a similar position to the
author.

The cover flap comments state, "Nice girls are taught early that serving God
means earning God's love and sacrificing oneself to meet the needs of others."
The author tells how here early years were influenced by "hellfire and
brimstone" preaching: "I heard a lot about sin and punishment, guilt and
shame."
