This message is for everyone who ever looked fondly back on the golden
days of The Amazon Slam. If you consider The Amazon Slam a dark and
sordid part of your past that you can discuss only with your therapist,
this message isn’t for you. This Friday, Feb. 16, I’m hosting a sort of
reincarnation of The Amazon Slam called the GirlsNQueers
Talent-Is-Beauty Contest. Unlike The Amazon Slam 1) The performances can incorporate music and 2) Performers can be queers who *are not* girls.
The
show includes J*me and his band The Radio Sweetheart as the feature
(not competitors!). Unadorned spoken-word artists are still welcome on
our stage as are girl-performers of all types whether they are queer or
not (but we have a special place in our hearts for the queer ones). The
rules are somewhat, but not completely slam-like. 1) Performers must perform original work 2) Each slot is five minutes (not three minutes) max. 3) Performers should have three original works (songs, poems, short whatevers) ready to go. But
folks can use props, dress in costume/drag, perform in groups and/or
have musical accompaniment (but the music must be original). Party
animals can split their time between this event and Dyke Night which is
just down the street.
We have lots of queer and girl talent here
in the Boston area, including folks who perform at open mikes like
Gender Crash, as well as acclaimed spoken-word folks who have branched
out into music and other areas while still being their bad-ass slam
selves. We also have plenty of great, queer musicians
who don’t get nearly enough love in this town. All of you who are on
this list: please come and perform! We have a cash prize! Everyone
else: come cheer on the pageant contestants and pass this email on to
anyone you know you’d like to see as part of the show. In these dark,
cold days of winter we need a big queer melange of good music,
blisteringly smart spoken-word plus a little silliness. As always
anyone is welcome to be part of our audience. The blurb is below.
Thanks and take care. Ren *** Ren Jender Presents GirlsNQueers Talent-Is-Beauty Pageant A Kick-Ass, Cash-Prize Contest of Spoken-Word and Musical Artists Hosted by Ren Jender (host and founder of The Amazon Slam--voted The Boston Phoenix's
