In theory there seems a clear way forward: Olmert has now agreed that in order to get back the three captured soldiers - one in Gaza, two in Lebanon - he would have to release a considerable number of ten thousand Palestinian, Lebanese and other Arabs in Israeli jails and prison camps.  Various mediators are already busy on the scene. Reverend Jesse Jackson, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, representatives of the Italian and German governments, the Egyptians. A prisoner exchange with the Palestinians could facilitate a cease fire, and an end to the agony of Gaza, and might also be followed by the creation of a Palestinian National Unity Government which the international community would not want to boycott. A prisoner exchange in Lebanon might entail the removal of the Israeli air and sea blockade which is hampering the Lebanese effort to rebuild their country. And the atmosphere in Israel might be changed to the better by the return of the three soldiers...

Plausible as it all may seem, at the moment it is still a speculation amidst a reality of continuing bloodhsed, oppression and hostility.

Here follows TOI's selection of this week's Occupation Magazine's daily picks + one which we added from Haaretz

The Question that will not be asked
Gershon Baskin - Jerusalem Post & Newsbull - "The conclusions of the national investigation commission will deal with re-arming, military tactics and strategies and the personal failures of officers and leaders during the war – all in preparation for the next war. The one and perhaps most important question that the commission will not even ask is: wasn’t there a way to entirely prevent the eruption of the war and to still achieve the strategic goals put forth by the Government?"

Peace is neither a privilege nor a luxury
Yariv Oppenheimer-Ma`ariv and APN Web Site- "Israeli society must accept the immediate need to quickly move towards peace with Syria and the Palestinians, and to establish a Palestinian state that will live as a neighbor alongside Israel."
http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=16076

Needed: A new mind-set
Naomi Chazan - The Jerusalem Post - "The hegemonic mind-set has dominated Israeli thinking in the past few years. Its most obvious characteristic is a heady self-assurance bordering on arrogance. This ubiquitous hubris has been severely jolted by the Lebanon experience, but it is still unclear whether this shock will also inject sufficient doses of humility necessary to dig below its surface."

Their view of the world is through a bombsight
Noam Chomsky - The Guardian - "King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, Washington`s oldest ally in the region, was compelled to say: "If the peace option is rejected due to the Israeli arrogance, then only the war option remains, and no one knows the repercussions befalling the region, including wars and conflict that will spare no one, including those whose military power is now tempting them to play with fire."

Errors of the war on terror
George Soros - Ha'aretz 01.09.06 - "Israel's failure to subdue Hezbollah demonstrates the many weaknesses of the war-on-terror concept. One weakness is that even if the targets are terrorists, the victims are often innocent civilians, and their suffering reinforces the terrorist cause. (...) What is missing is a U.S. government that is not blinded by the war-on-terror concept.

Protest inside the occupation maze
Reported by Adam Keller - Gush Shalom email -
In the past two months, the Ofer Prison Camp has become the de-facto new seat of the Palestinian Legislative Council as well as the Palestinian Cabinet. Quite a few of the legislators and ministers were brought here already in the army`s first late-night sweep back in July, among them Sheikh Abu-Tir whose East Jerusalem home hosted a first hopeful effort by Gush Shalom activists to open a peaceful dialogue with the new Palestinian government, and his fellow Palestinian M.P. Atun.

Twilight Zone / Deadly diaries
Gideon Levy - Haaretz - "Shifa Hospital in Gaza, the fourth floor. Two brothers. Their parents and siblings were all killed while they were sleeping. Only the brothers were saved from the inferno caused by two missiles dropped by a plane on their house in the middle of the night. Awad, 19, is seriously injured; Mohammed, 20, uninjured, tends him. Their parents and all seven of their younger siblings, including a disabled sister, were killed. Just try to imagine."

The Accidental Immigrant
Amira Hass - Counterpunch - "The Israeli authorities that revoked Ju`beh`s residency of his native Jerusalem did not allow reunification with his wife in Ramallah, and finally also decided that even as a tourist, he does not have the right to live in his homeland. "

http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=16077

Last ditch effort
Khaled Amayreh-Al ahram weekly-"Some observers have suggested that Israel may seek (as though it is not doing so enough already) to beat down the Palestinians further as a kind of compensation for the wholesome defeat the Israeli army suffered at the hands of resistance fighters in South Lebanon."
