In a week where the Israeli society was in the grip of a
presidential scandal which no script writer could have invented, and in
Gaza a Palestinian power struggle drama is unfolding Gush Shalom's weekly ad
("...and what about that other rape, which is going on already for 40
years?) was an effort to change the focus. While no
breakthrough is in sight, the struggle goes
on.

Matthew Yglesias - The American Prospect - Everything Clark
said, in short, is true. What`s more, everybody knows it`s true. The worst that
can truthfully be said about Clark is that he expressed himself in a slightly
odd way. This, it seems clear, he did because it`s a sensitive issue and he
worried that if he spoke plainly he`d be accused of trafficking in
anti-Semitism. So he spoke unclearly and, for his trouble, got ... accused of
trafficking in anti-Semitism.

Abbas and Livni meet in
Davos
AP - Jerusalem Post - Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni said after
meeting Abbas on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum that she and the
Palestinian leader had tried to explore "any way to push the process." But she
suggested the road to peace would be long, with their meeting just one among
many.

death toll has reached 18 in nearly 48 hours. Clashes between Executive Forces
and the security services have been heaviest in the Shajaiyeh neighborhood, near
the Al Azhar and Islamic universities, in Tel Al Howa, and around Shifa
Hospital.

word “apartheid” “has caused great concern in the Jewish community.” He said he
had used it “knowing that it would be provocative.” He said he had intended to
describe conditions not in Israel but in the occupied Palestinian territories,
and had not meant to “equate Zionism with racism,” but to point out “that this
cruel oppression is contrary to the tenets of the Jewish religious faith and
contrary to the basic principles of the state of Israel.”

that concussion grenades and teargas (which the wind carried back to the
soldiers) isn’t going to disperse the protesters, who kept trying to cross to
the lands through the now less guarded gate, the army moved back to simply
pushing demonstrators and beating them with clubs, while continuing the shooting
range towards the village. When asked if killing an 11 year old girl in Anata
last week wasn’t enough, a soldiers replied: “She probably had
it coming”.
