Subject: [TOI-Billboard] Welcome to Riyadh - April01, 2007

Welcome to Riyadh

Email updates April 1, 2007
TOI-Billboard in cooperation with Occupation Magazine

This was the week that we saw another opportunity being missed. The Olmert government does not like the inclusion of the Right of Return. But the Riyadh offer speaks of a "just and agreed solution". What more can Olmert wish?  Or is all this rather an excuse because he doesn't really want to - or cannot - get out of the West Bank.

Hereafter a choice from the past days

Orly Azoulay reporting from Riyadh
Orly Azoulay - Yediot Aharonot/Y-Net - The representative of the Saudi Information Ministry, who picked us up in his car, asked one of the journalists if he knew anything about an Israeli journalist that was due to arrive. "She very much wanted to but was not granted a visa," the representative said. The journalist burst into laughter: "She received a visa and an invitation from the Saudi foreign minister." The official opened his eyes widely and went on to ask when the journalist would arrive and where she was. "Here she is, sitting in your car," the journalist pointed to me. Had his seat not had a backrest he would have fallen over. He looked at me, remained silent for a moment and then said: "Welcome to Riyadh. Welcome, you have nothing to worry about; we shall all look after you. You are our guest".

Tom Friedman`s suggestions to King Abdallah
Thomas Friedman/Abd-al-Bari Atwan - New York Times/Al-Quds al-Arabi - The articles of Thomas Friedman have long since ceased to be regarded as merely the ideas of a single columnist and came to be seen as unofficial policy statements by significant forces in the US corridors of power. So was his recent article with various proposals and suggestions to Sadi Arabia`s King Abdallah, to which Arab commentator Abd-al-Bari Atwan takes a strong exeption.

Pussycat
Uri Avnery - Gush Shalom - Julius Caesar, as is well known, reported to the Roman Senate "I came. I saw. I conquered." Condoleezza could report to the US Senate: "I came. I saw. I capitulated." Who to? To a failing Israeli prime minister, whose popularity rating is approaching zero.

Free Hussam Shaheen: A statement from the family of imprisoned peace activist
Ma`an Bethlehem - Hussam Shaheen, arrested by Israeli soldiers at Ramallah on January 28, 2004, has been outspoken in support of peace and reconciliation. Now the Israeli military prosecutor asks for him to get 24 years` imprisonment.

For a change, no army attack on anti-Wall protest at Um Salamuna
George Rishmawi - IMEMC - Around two hundred protestors marched in the village of Um Salamuna, south of Bethlehem to protest the construction of the wall on their land and to commemorate the 31 anniversary of Land Day. Protestors, including Palestinians, Internationals and Israelis, carried signs and banners and chanted slogans calling for the removal of the Wall, describing it as land theft that is killing the Palestinian life. No clashes erupted with the soldiers as the protestors remained nonviolent.

Thousands of Arab Israelis stage mass Land Day rally in Sakhnin
Roee Nahmias - Y-Net -In addition to thousands of Arab citizens, the mass march through the city drew Arab Israeli MKs, Arab community leaders, and Jewish left-wing activists such as Tali Fahima who had been in administrative detention for contacting a Fatah military commander in the West Bank.

CERD`s wishlist concerning a racism free Israel
Adalah Newsletter - UN Committee Urges Israel to Revoke the Citizenship Law, Dismantle the Wall, Bind the Jewish National Fund to Anti-Discrimination Principles, and Recognize the Unrecognized Villages

European Views of the Middle East / Perception, Prejudice, Projection
John Bunzl - "Branding hostilities emanating from the Middle East automatically or intentionally as Anti-Semitic is dangerous because doing so would banalize and trivialize genuine Anti-Semitism. It would, I suggest, also constitute a misjudgement of hostility by Muslims. Anti-Semitic prejudice and bigotry of the Christian-European variant is not driving the big majority of Muslims and not even the few perpetrators of violence. The hostility toward Jews is rather a regrettable by-product of more recent events in the Middle East and the world over.

Billboards for peace (you are supposed to sign a petition)
Avaaz.org - Today in a moment of rare hope for the Middle East, the Arab League is making a serious peace offer to Israel in Riyadh. The international community is rallying in support -- but by refusing to address core issues like the 1967 borders, Israel risks throwing away this chance.

Risks and rewards in Ramallah (interview with Sam Bahour)
Sharmila Devi - Financial Times - Sam Bahour has a warm manner and an infectious laugh. But beneath the avuncular exterior lie a sharp intelligence and a steady nerve that have helped the US-born Palestinian businessman survive since he moved to the West Bank in 1994. "If I wasn`t optimistic, I would pack up my bags and go back to the US," he says with a laugh.

News and updates from the June 5 Initiative
Gershon Baskin/Hanna Siniora - IPCRI - The June 5 Initiative, a grass roots enterprise is organizing events in Palestine, Israel and the rest of the world in support of Israeli-Palestinian, Two States for Two Peoples, one Peace. Peace must be with justice – end of conflict, end of occupation. Events will be held in cities around the world during the week of June 5 (June 5-11, 2007). These events will include marches, demonstrations, seminars, peace concerts, exhibitions. Etc. under the slogans listed above. It is important to begin to meet with the other people in your city that are engaged. We are working to make contact between all of you. It is true that there are already similar initiatives that have been launched around the world for the same week. We are trying to cooperate and coordinate wherever possible.

Global Day of Action - June 9-10, 2007 - The World Says NO to Israeli Occupation!
ICNP - People across the globe will come together on those days to demand an end to occupation and the realization of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, including the right to self-determination and the right to establish an independent, sovereign Palestinian state with its capital in Jerusalem. We will insist that our own governments stop providing military, economic, diplomatic and corporate support for Israel`s illegal occupation, and instead create new foreign policies that will support an end to occupation, equal rights for all, and a comprehensive, just and lasting peace.
