This week's
Ha'aretz ad of Gush Shalom: "Olmert wants
to meet the king of Saudi
Arabia. / A
meeting means normalization. Normalization is the main objective of Israeli
policy. / What is Olmert prepared to give in return? /
Nothing."
Meanwhile we know that while making this "overture" the Israeli army
received authorization from the government to renew the incursions into
Gaza, which had
been stopped in
November.

articles
New plan may keep major settlements outside
fence Amos Harel - Ha`aretz - The defense establishment may abandon
the plan to include bulges in the separation fence - aimed at keeping major
settlements bloc such as Ariel, Immanuel and Kedumin within the Israeli side of
the divide. Officials currently re-evaluating the "bulge" proposal are
considering an alternative plan, which proposes to seal the fence near the
settlements of Elkana and Beit Aryeh, far west of Ariel, and surround Ariel and
some other settlements with an enclosed security fences without a territorial
linkage to Israel. http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=19281
The Colonial Drama of Israel and Palestine Matan
Kaminer - Hagada Hasmalit - Seen from this side of the Mediterranean, the
Western (and especially European) view on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
exhibits a strange trait. One often feels that one is playing a part in a play
scripted by others, and that deviations from the allotted role may be frowned
upon by the audience. Of course, the most obnoxious version of this theatrical
piece is the one in which the Israeli is cast as a brave liberal David, up
against the brutish Muslim Goliath. Seeing as I am writing for a left audience
and not for The New York Times, this play does not concern me here. Often,
though, one feels that the international left is also sitting down to watch a
drama; one that might be entitled Colonialism. http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=19280
Bassem Eid v Ali Abunimah debate on the Palestinian Right of
Return Bassem Eid v Ali Abunimah - The Electronic Intifada - ALI
ABUNIMAH: "This country has proven unpartitionable and yet people who insist on
Jewish supremacy are trying to find a Bantustan solution that will absolve
Israel of giving political rights to the five million plus Palestinians it
rules, while maintaining the fiction that it is a `Jewish democracy`. This
racist state can only maintain this fiction by insisting on the exclusion of
millions more Palestinians and their descendants forced out of their homes".
BASSEM EID: "My belief is that building peace between enemies needs painful
compromise. I believe that the foundation of a nation state that has struggled
with occupation for more than 40 years will only be achieved if some rights are
abandoned. If the International Community won`t guarantee the right of return
for the Palestinian Refugees then what is the Palestinian guarantee for this
right?" http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=19279
Seeking peace by stealth Jerrold Kessel and Pierre
Klochendler - The International Herald Tribune - Despite Israel`s normally
lively political discourse, the Saudi initiative does not seem to engage
Israelis at all. Arab declarations of good intentions no longer convince most
Israelis. It works the other way, too. Palestinians are not persuaded by
declarations of Israeli good intentions. They, too, have lost faith in peace.
Only after stealth negotiations are crowned with an agreement in principle
should the oath of silence be broken. To convert a secret agreement into
workable reality, shock treatment will be needed to win public approval and to
overcome skeptics and doomsayers. http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=19264
Don`t say we didn`t know #49 Amos Gvirtz - In his weekly series of life in the warzone which we call home Gvirtz
focuses on concrete situations about which you don`t
read elsewhere. This week he zooms in on a settler... http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=19241
A Missed Opportunity for Peace Robert
Novak - Washington Post - (...) no progress toward a two-state solution likely
for the remainder of George W. Bush`s presidency. http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=19242
Israeli forces deliver notices of destruction to
Palestinian refugees in Shu`fat (Jerusalem) Maisa Abu Ghazaleh -
Palestine News Network - In the dark of night of the first Pesach holiday troops
entered East Jerusalem`s Shu`fat Refugee Camp to wake up families and tell them
that they would be refugees again. http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=19254
Abducted soldier's father: Gov`t must learn from
Britain Jack Khoury - Haaretz - "It doesn`t interest me that
according to the law, Hezbollah is defined as a terror organization," Shlomo
Goldwasser told the 150 demonstrators who had gathered in Tel Aviv and marched
along the Yarkon River as part of a cross-Israel journey in support of releasing
the captive IDF soldiers. "We can talk to Hezbollah in order to return our sons
home." http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=19244
Agriculture Ministry smuggling unit suspected of
abuse Mijal Grinberg - Haaretz - The unit, according to a ministry
report from December 2005, was responsible for illegal destruction of produce
from the territories, purchase of firearms against regulations, deviation from
the unit`s defined fields of activity and a long list of other concerns. http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=19243
Torture: Read it in the Israeli press
Miko Peled - The Electronic Intifada - "Mr. Hadar also touches on the issue
of torture as part of the interrogation process. He mentions cases of
interrogations where his agents lied in court about getting confessions through
torture. "Since the suspects were Arabs the judges would always take our word
over theirs" he says and continues to say that he found "Arabs were often glad
to be slapped a few times" because it gave them an excuse to turn against their
people and collaborate with the interrogators. He typically refrains from using
the "P" word and refers to Palestinians only as Arabs or as terrorists." http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=19227
Palestinian hope held hostage - Economic sanctions
are keeping Palestinians from building a life Salam Fayyad - LA
Times - "We do not aspire to be a beggar nation, dependent on the world to feed
our people. We have the capacity, education and talent to build a thriving
economy and a strong democracy. But we cannot do so while Israel seals our
borders and withholds tax revenue it owes us, or while U.S. banking regulations
prevent banks from handling government business." http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=19211
Ball now in Israel's court Shabtai Gold -
Jerusalem Post- "Amr Mousa, secretary-general of the Arab League, said in Riyadh
that Israel should first accept the proposal and use it as a basis for
negotiation, instead of simply criticizing and trying to force changes." http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=19189
Here grow graves Ory Yassur - Hagada
Hasmalit - `"Ory Yassur`s best friend lost his ten-year-old daughter this week.
I am sure this is of no interest to you as it was a Palestinian child who was
shot in her head by a soldier." This was to be the introduction to an article
Yassur wrote a month ago, after Abir Aramin was killed outside her school near
Jerusalem. The article was submitted to ynet where Yassur is a columnist, but
the editor of the Op-Ed section found it "too emotional" and decided not to
publish it. Here it is.` http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=19171
The Jewish People are not my People. My People are
Hashem and his Family from Bil`in. Benny Ziffer - Ha'aretz -
translation from Hebrew by Rann Bar-On - "There is nothing festive in this
posting. Passover, shmassover, I hate the holidays because while we celebrate,
while us Jews babble slogans about freedom, and fantasize that we are a
miserable enslaved nation, we are in fact busy enslaving the Palestinian people.
It`s become banal and boring to repeat this a thousand times, but in my eyes,
the hypocrisy cries out to the heavens. [The Passover prayer] "Oh bread of
poverty" is no longer the bread of poverty of Jews but of numerous Palestinian
families in the Occupied Territories, who live off thirty or forty shekels the
head of the household manages to scrounge together doing temporary jobs once
every few days. " http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=19170
J-BIG members believe that Israel`s policies
"constitute a betrayal of the best trends in Jewish ethical tradition" and
operate a form of racism. Ruth Tenne -
Palestine Chronicle - "The new group, J-BIG, is an outcome of the deep
frustration Jewish peace activists feel towards the inaction displayed by the
Jewish community and its liberal wing with regard to Israel`s repressive
occupation of Palestinian land." http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=19197
Welcome the Palestinian National Unity Government and
recognize it now! EJJP European Jews for JustPeace Urgent
Appeal to Dr. Angela Merkel - "European Jews for a Just Peace calls on the
President of the EU Council , Dr. Angela Merkel: Madame President, support the
immediate recognition of the Palestinian Government and the cancellation of all
economic, social and political restrictions which have been placed upon it. The
EU council and all Governments of the European Union should recognize the
opportunity to revive the peace process with Israel which has opened with the
swearing in of the Palestinian Government.Time is precious. It must not be
wasted." http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=19215

Weekly Digest: Reports from Checkpoints, 25- 31.3.07
& MachsomWatch Monthly Summary, Maatria, February 2007
MachsomWatch -- Sunday, 26.3.07, 15:45, Qalandya: “An argument
broke out between the soldiers and a driver who lost his cool when the soldiers
decided to examine the sandwich of his 10-year old son in the back seat. The car
was surrounded by armed soldiers, while the frightened child shrank into the
upholstery. The soldiers confiscated the driver`s ID and sent him to wait for
the police in the CP bus station. Instead of a policeman, 2 civilian armed
guards appeared and told the driver to come with them. Luckily, we had reported
the incident, which led to the armed guards disappearing. All the problems were
resolved when the policeman apologized to the driver for the behavior of the
soldiers” http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=19168
