 Struggle

Not only in war you failed - also in peace-making
Meir Shalev - Yediot Aharonot - [Translation of speech at May 3 rally] "Forty years of occupation are forty years of no education, no health, no personal security, no welfare, and also no proper military training - and the result is all too visible. But the urgent need for a vision to guide us to a better future is something which your successors will have to address, not you. From you we expect and demand just this: go home. Goodbye."

 Outsmarting the Occupation in Bil’in
Martinez - ISM - Thirty demonstrators turned in a direction where the army did not expect them, walking between two barbed wires, and soldiers were caught off guard. Officers ordered the soldiers not to shoot, and negotiated with the demonstrators, and as a compromise allowed them to reach the point where they had been forbidden to step in the past month and more. A small victory, but a victory nevertheless.

Solidarity concert brings together Jewish, Palestinian neighbors
Daphna Berman - Haaretz - Pulled together by the Arab-Jewish Center of Jabal Mukaber, which operates under the slogan "neighbors to neighbors," the concert and reception drew some 300 people, half Jewish and half Palestinian. "The wall would separate people from their families, the center of their lives, their source of livelihood and their medical facilities," said Hillel Bardin, a resident of Talpiyot-Arnona and one of the event organizers. "We`re seeking an alternative route around the village rather than through it. If security can be achieved without destroying these people`s lives, it is certainly preferable."

Painted peace activists entangle illegal separation fence in Al Numan, Bethlehem district
Polly Bangoriad - IMEMC - Today, peaceful protestors marched from both sides of the illegal separation fence between the southern West Bank villages of Al Qhass and Al Numan. They met at the razor wire-topped fence to hold a non-violent demonstration against the illegal Israeli barrier from both sides.

 Occupation reality

 Bushra`s final exam
Gideon Levy - Haaretz - "You killed my daughter!," Ruqiya screamed at the soldiers, pounding on the sides of the armored vehicles, but no one came out to help. She told the soldiers the house was unlocked and they could go enter to search for the wanted man or to see the body of his dead sister, but no one went in. "Why didn`t they enter the house? Why didn`t they tell us to come out right away? Had they called us before, we would have come right out."

Israeli tycoon Idan Ofer: joint business - a way of fostering peace
Simon Clark - bloomberg.com - ``If I was a Palestinian businessman, I wouldn`t live in the territories,`` Ofer, 51, says. ``How much can you suffer and hope all the time?``

PCHR Weekly Report: On Israeli Human Rights Violations in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (26 April -02 May 2007)
Palestinian Centre for Human Rights Weekly Report No. 17/2007-"..26 April 2007, IOF shot dead a member of the Palestinian Presidential Guard (Force 17) and wounded 2 of his colleagues in al-Bireh town in the West Bank. Those security men were chasing a suspicious vehicle when IOF soldiers positioned in the vicinity of “Pssigot” settlement fired at them. On Wednesday, 2 May 2007, IOF shot dead a Palestinian civilian and arrested his brother in the northern Gaza Strip. IOF fired at the two brothers when they were collecting metals. "

 Commentary

The Livni-Rice Plan: towards a just peace or apartheid?
Jeff Halper-ICAHD - "In that way the Palestinians get their state, albeit with “provisional borders,” Israel expands onto 82-85% of the country while still conforming to the Road Map and apartheid – in the guise of a “two-state solution” – becomes political reality. And that’s where we stay forever. "

 Remember the siege
Yehuda Litani - Ynet - There were numerous signs – the War of Attrition, the Yom Kippur War, the First Lebanon War – but we didn’t pay heed: More settlements, more outposts, more land expropriation. Next month too, many will be quick to mark 40 years of "emancipation" of the Territories and the "unification" of Jerusalem while millions of Palestinians are still subjected to humiliating occupation. (...) It is the occupation that has transformed the job of the "Israel Defense Force" into a "police force"– with soldiers at checkpoints, apprehending wanted persons, searching for explosives laboratories and serving as prison wardens at detainee camps – instead of training for battle against Arab armies.

 The price for Israel
Ayman El-Amir - Al Ahram -"There was a time when the US edged towards an "even-handed" policy in the Middle East. In the mid-1970s, the US went as far as voting for Security Council resolutions that branded Israeli settlements in the occupied territories as "illegal and an obstacle to peace"."

Blessings of war / "Wars Don`t Just Happen"
Reuven Pedatzur- Haaretz - "Every successful war has made it that much easier to choose the use of power in the next war." "...one of the central concepts of the Israeli "military culture" is that there is no political option on which Israel can base its security. The conclusion is thus that Israel has only the military option, which is regarded as an inevitable necessity. "

 Above the Law
Adalah - Newsletter - "The General Security Services (GSS or “Shabak”) alleges that former Arab MK Dr. Azmi Bishara is guilty of one of the most serious crimes in Israeli law: assisting the enemy during wartime. The punishment for this crime is the death penalty or life imprisonment. Dr. Bishara explained in a recent interview that the GSS is trying to twist regular discussions he held with his friends and colleagues during the war on Lebanon last summer, wire-tapped by the GSS, into a serious crime."

 The commentators` betrayal
Amnon Levy - Ynet - "Just like a herd running after its shepherd, the press chased our blind leadership. We can count on one hand the journalists who dared object to the war. The overwhelming majority of Israeli journalists preferred to give up on the role of "guard dog." Instead of barking, they preferred to suck up. Instead of criticizing, they preferred to advise. They preferred to forget that patriotism doesn`t only mean to push forward; at times it means to yell out: Stop!"
