Put on the
light!
Here
follow the September 8, 2007 - press picks from different
sources, posted by TOI-staff on Occupation Magazine.(We
do the updating on Saturdays, but OM is updated daily, each day of the
week by a different
editor.)
While the mainstream news is totally dominated by the still
mysterious intrusion of Israeli fighter airplanes into Syrian territory we take
the freedom to focus our spotlight elsewhere. We don't feel like placing
our bet in the dangerous saber-rattling game, whose mayor purpose may be:
taking away the attention from other things, for example:
Sderot-Gaza.
Put on the
light!
Ariela Ringle-Hoffman - Yediot Aharonot - If there is
solution to the shooting of missiles, it is always based on agreements. In this
case, an Israel-Hamas agreement, an agreement with the elected Palestinian
government. Negotiations could not take place in Olmert`s official residence
under the glare of publicity, and there will be no embracing or kissing. But it
could well be conducted clandestinely, via all kinds of mediators and middle
men. It is possible to grab the offer - made by Hamas and never retracted - to
make a ten-year cease-fire. We can offer to give up our insistence over
imprisoning Gaza and tightly controlling and inspecting every matchbox which
goes in, to let the Gaza international airport be opened, to relax the naval
blockade. Tomorrow, the price will be higher. In short, put on the light!

`A
pessimist is an optimist with information`, Afif Safieh interview
Akiva Eldar - Haaretz - Passing through the checkpoints on the way
to Ramallah and Jericho illustrated for Safieh the huge gap between the festive
promises Israel gave the Americans to ease up on residents of the territories
and improve Abu Mazen`s standing, and the sad reality in the territories.

Palestinian
headlines (IMEMC) - Israeli raids & Gaza internal strife
Today`s
IMEMC news include items referring to the routine of the Israeli occupation
forces activities: Palestinian militant killed in army raid on the Gaza Strip, a
Hamas Public Relations official kidnapped ("arrested" in the official Israeli
terminology), raids and invasions of Jenin and Qabatiya and clashes with local
militias, invasion of Nablus targeting two charitable societies, Palestinian
woman gives birth at Israeli checkpoint. There is also much about the internal
Palestinian strife, especially the Fatah demonstrative open-air prayers in the
Gaza Strip and the Hamas crack-down on them.

Twilight
Zone /The school year that never started
Gideon Levy - Haaretz - In
addition to her two sons and one daughter, who were already imprisoned, bereaved
mother Najah al-Qarinawi now has two more in jail: Sadiq, who was seriously
wounded and subsequently arrested, and his brother Wafiq, who accompanied the
body of his stepbrother to the dead boy`s home in Israel and was arrested for
being in the country illegally. [This Levy column - about realities beyond
imagination - has an aspect of suspense - ed.]

Maxwell`s
Silver Hammer
Linda Ford and Ira Glunts - Counter-Punch - Leafing
through a fairly bland magazine I found that my alma mater, Syracuse University,
now supports continual and all-out war against a vaguely defined “terrorist”
enemy which includes condoning lethal collateral damage to civilians and teaming
up with Israeli military institutions in order to learn methods that they have
found “successful” against the Palestinians in the course of a 40-years old
occupation.

Peace
through soccer?
Eli Ashkenazi - Haaretz - Hapoel Tel Aviv will
begin operating soccer schools next month in villages outside Nablus. "The goal
is for 2,500 children in five villages to be participating within a
year-and-a-half," says Meir Orenstein, the Education and Social Project manager
of Hapoel Tel Aviv. "We intentionally went to remote villages, where conditions
are hard - there`s no running water there, and the pitches where they`ll be
playing are just gravel surfaces," said Marshak, who as peacenik Kibbutz
organizer already has ties with these leaders in agricultural assistance
projects.
