CO Ben
Kogan - 21 days solitary confinement in military prison
[This is an article from an earlier date including a
solidarity action request]
New Profile - Ben Kogan, a pacifist
conscientious objector, was sentenced to 21 days in military prison for refusing
to serve in the Israeli army. Ben appeared before the military Conscience
Committee in December, but was rejected. Ben refuses to wear a uniform in prison
and to refer to the prison commanders by their ranks. He was therefore sent to
solitary confinement and denied telephone calls.

Articles:
Israeli
forces kill Fatah military leader in Nablus
Ma`an News Agency -
Ahmed Sanakra, a leader in Al-Aqsa Brigades, was killed when Israeli Special
Forces stormed Balata refugee camp. He had survived several earlier Israeli
attempts to kill him. [Israeli Army policy at
Nablus in recent weeks had
followed the cynical line of setting the Fatah-contoled PA to fight local Hamas
members while continuing Israeli raids into the city to attack members of Fatah
itself. Ed.]

Abbas
threatens to quit if `escalation` continues
Khaled Abu Toameh -
Jerusalem Post - Abbas was particularly enraged that Israel had stepped up its
military operations shortly after US President George W. Bush`s visit to the
region. Meanwhile, the ongoing IDF attacks appear to have brought Hamas and
Fatah closer to each other after months of fighting. Representatives of the two
parties have appealed to their leaders to set aside their differences and join
ranks to face the Israeli operations.

Report
2007: less killed, but human rights situation deteriorating
B`Tselem
- (...) far too often, Israel fails to appropriately balance its security needs
with equally important values, including protecting the rights of Palestinians
under its control (...) Israeli authorities often exploit security threats in
order to advance prohibited political interests, such as perpetuating
settlements and effectively annexing them to Israel.

Arab
citizens of Israel and American Jews - chances and dilemmas
Shalom
Dichter - Haaretz - Over the years, Diaspora Jewry has abetted, perhaps
unwittingly, discrimination against Arab citizens by the government of Israel,
by means of the Jewish Agency, the Jewish National Fund, and other institutions.
Neverthless, at present world Jewry - precisely because of its special
understanding of the concepts of democracy and equal citizenship - can help
influence Israel to develop democratic
and inclusive citizenship and help the internal Israeli campaign to eliminate
discrimination against its Arab citizens.

Assaf Uni - Jewish
Chronicle/Haaretz/Jerusalem Post - "Do you believe that Israel`s actions
constitute international war crimes?" "Do you think there will be something like
the Nuremberg Trials for Israelis involved in the conflict, or that there will
be truth and reconciliation committees like in
South
Africa?" "Why do you
designate Hamas as a terror organization and reject dialogue, when Menachem
Begin and Yitzhak Shamir were terrorists themselves?"

Court
gives state 20 days to answer appeal against settler radio
Gush
Shalom - During the discussion, it turned out that the Supreme Court Library has
no copy of the eleven Legislative Annexes enacted by the West Bank Military
Commander to regulate daily life in the settlements. Adv. Gabi Lasky,
representing Gush Shalom, told the judges that these Annexes are also not
available in Israeli public libraries and the libraries of Law Faculties at
Israeli universities, nor do their texts appear in the online legal resource
websites. "This is nearly a secret legislation" she said.

Two mustreads of earlier
days:
Clueless
in Gaza
Uri Misgav - YnetNews - "One cannot kill 18 Gazans in
air strikes and then express stunned lamentations after Hamas renews its
impressive launching capability. One cannot move troops and embark on operations
in the morning, and then express “serious concerns over the Gilad Shalit deal”
at night. "

Economic
Warfare in Gaza
Yossi Wolfson - Challenge - "before
Israel hardened its
measures, 87% of Gazans lived beneath the poverty line, which was reckoned at
$2.40 per day. Already then there were perceived shortages in basic products,
and food prices rose by tens of percentage points. According to figures of the
World Food Program, 85% of Gazans depend on aid to purchase food. In the view of
Israel, however, the existing supply of goods is above what the law obligates it
to allow, and the supplies of electricity and gasoline are even twice the
minimum required."
