 Bush should stay home
Akiva Eldar - Haaretz - Bush is an accomplice to an offense far worse than all of the criminal offenses of which Olmert is suspected combined. Every speech made by the president is one more bit of exposure of the nakedness of the Palestinian circles who tied their collective fate to the Annapolis declaration, which pledged to "make every effort to conclude an agreement before the end of 2008." In light of the stasis in the negotiations, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) seems likely to resign even before Olmert does.

Truce negotiations and the question of prisoner exchange
IMEMC/Jerusalem Post - Two earlier Israeli conditions were met by Hamas: that the truce be in Gaza only and not include the West Bank, and that smaller militias operating in Gaza be obliged to respect the truce. Now, Olmert introduced a new demand: the release of captured Israeli soldier Gil`ad Shalit, without Israel releasing most of the prisoners on the Hamas wish list. The Palestinian Center for Defending the Detainees called upon Shalit`s captors to remain steadfast with their demands, as "thousands of detainees and their families have hopes and expectations for a prisoner swap deal". Meanwhile, the continued fighting in and around Gaza claimed the life of a 70-year old Israeli woman, arousing the anger and frustration of Israeli border community inhabitants. [Ed.]

 Leftists mark Palestinian ‘Nakba Day’
Aviram Zino - Ynet - Two hundred left-wing activists and Israeli Arabs marched on Sunday from the Jerusalem Theater square to the Nature Museum on Emek Refaim Street in the capital marking 60 years since “Nakba Day", or “catastrophe” of Israel`s inception in 1948.

9 activists injured as army attacks demonstrators who removed roadblock in Shufa
ISM/JMCC - Israeli, Palestinian and international activists together with residents of Shufa village carried picks, shovels and hoes and within two hours removed a roadblock that cuts Shufa from nearby Izbit Shufa. A village tractor was needed to move some of the larger rocks. Finally, a service mini-bus was able to cross through the remnants of the roadblock, to the cheering of the waiting crowd. Soldiers watched and did not interefere, but when activists attempted to make their way to remove a further roadblock soldiers blocked them, shooting sound bombs, followed by a barrage of rubber-coated steel bullets at close range. Four Palestinians, four Israelis and one international were injured, one requiring hospitalisation.

IDF soldier documented shooting demonstrator at close range in Bil’in
Ali Waked - Ynet - In a video shot mid March by B’Tselem (The Israel Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories), a young Israeli is seen innocently standing near a group of soldiers, when he is suddenly shot at close range. NB: video given.
“I yelled ‘Enough with the Violence’ at them, and then a soldier turned around and fired a rubber bullet into my leg, but the village’s residents suffer more. Compared to what they are going through – my case is nothing.”

Ynet reporting on New Profile campaign against the automatism of army service
Natasha Mozgovaya - Ynet - "Some 56% of youths each year do not enlist in the army or do not complete army service," the movement`s charter states. "Therefore no one who`s been exempted from service by the army should feel bad about himself.

Elana Kirsh - Jerusalem Post - Text of petition of Jewish Voice for Peace and Just Foreign Policy: (...) Jimmy Carter speaks for me when he says that resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict requires talking to Hamas. 64% of Israelis have said they support talks with Hamas. Please support including talks with Hamas in efforts to achieve peace between Israelis and Palestinians."

Five Myths on Who`s Really `Pro-Israel`
Jeremy Ben-Ami - Washington Post - Six decades ago, my father fought alongside Menachem Begin for Israel`s independence. If you`d have told him back then that politicians in the world`s last superpower would be jockeying today to see who can be more "pro-Israel," he would have laughed at you.

 Israel needs tough love
Jerome Segal - Haaretz - Did Carter focus world attention on an overlooked but major opportunity to end the conflict? The answer is: Yes.
