~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~~-~~-~-~-~-~- GAZA - We kill and are killed. They kill and are killed ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~~-~~-~-~-~-~- TOI-Billboard Oct. 2, 2004 [Introduction // protesting between Yom Kippur and Succot // Olive harvest overshadowed // "When people don??™t talk ??“ they kill and are killed" an appeal to common sense by Uri Avnery // links to two articles and some statistics ] Succot, last of the September Jewish Holy Days, was to mark the start of the olive harvest, which in the bitter years of the new milennium became an occasion for showing solidarity with Palestinians - the participation in the harvest of Israelis and internationals protecting the Palestinian harvesters against settler harassment. The joint harvesting did get started, but this Succot is being overshadowed by a terrible escalation in the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip, after two Israeli children got killed by Palestinian Qassam missiles randomly shot in the direction of the Negev town of Sderot, and on the same day two Israeli soldiers and a settler woman also were killed. Under the lead of a man like Sharon the strongest army of the region could not but react to this by killing in one day five times more Palestinians - in this war which was already taking Palestinian lives nearly every day. (Does anybody still remember that earlier in the week more than thirty houses were demolished in Khan Yunis, Gaza Strip?) In the few days between Yom Kippur and Succot several protests: --Courage to Refuse went to the Gaza checkpoint after a soldier got killed - to protest that soldiers are sacrificed on behalf of settlers (Courage to Refuse is the group nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize!); --Coalition of Women for Peace called a protest against the house demolitions in Khan Younes, distributing to passers-by an order for the demolition of the Ministry of Defence (to get rid of "a legitimate military target" situated in a residential area). --The letter of four elite airforce officers was also protesting especially the injustice of the relentless house demolitions in the Gaza Strip. On the evening of the extremely bloody Thursday Sept. 30, Uri Avnery wrote an appeal to common sense which was sent out to the Israeli and international press by Gush Shalom. Read it, as well as some picks of the press hereafter. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ We kill and are killed. They kill and are killed - Uri Avnery ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Blood flows in the Gaza Strip. Ours and theirs. We kill and are killed. They kill and are killed. How to stop this madness? Everybody knows that all the known methods have failed. Another invasion of the Gaza Strip. Another declaration that the strip has been "cut into three pieces." More aerial bombardments. More "targeted" assassinations. More homes demolished. More trees uprooted ??“ all has been tried. All has failed. Let us not allow bankrupt military and political leaders to lead us again into this dead end. We are faced with a guerilla war. No government in the world has yet won such a war. What to do? The talk about "unilateral" disengagement must stop. We are not living in a vacuum. No disengagement is possible without negotiations and agreement. Therefore a dialogue with the Palestinian Authority on the withdrawal from the Gaza Strip must start immediately. There can be no disengagement "under fire". A cease-fire must be attained. The Egyptians have proposed it. They assert that they are able to achieve it. Ariel Sharon has rejected this categorically. And beyond all this - a real peace process for a permanent solution must be started at long last. There is somebody to talk with. There is something to talk about.
