Scoring a point in court

SUPREME COURT DEMANDS DAN HALUTZ SET OUT HIS VIEWS IN WRITING

"Yesh Gvul activists were gratified by the moral victory, but express doubts about the willingness of Israel's judicial system to challenge the military-political establishment by suspending Halutz or censuring him for his role in the Sh'hadeh bombing."

THIS ISN'T SECURITY - IT'S CRUELTY

B'Tselem: IDF destroys homes of innocent Palestinians

"The report also slams the High Court of Justice, accusing it of acting as a "rubber stamp" for government policy regarding the demolitions. The report says that 628 housing units, which were home to 3,983 people, were demolished as a punitive measure."

Future leaders - Gush Shalom advocating prisoners release

Gush Shalom's advertised statement - advocating the release of Marwan Barghouti and other prisoners before the Palestinian elections - was quoted worldwide:

"Yitzhak Rabin
   -was, under the British Mandate
the leader of the prisoners in Rafah prison camp.

 Yitzhak Shamir
   -was arrested as a terrorist
and exiled to a prison camp in Erithrea.

 Menahem Begin
-was branded as a terrorist with a big prize on his head and blood on
his hands, after he blew up the King David hotel in Jerusalem with a
    hundred civilian dead."

The ongoing Palestinian olive harvest

With the every year more close-by settlers shooting at harvesters, stealing olives, or destroying the trees joining Palestinian olive harvesters has become a major issue of a variety of peace and human rights groups, united in a "harvest coalition", each group taking upon itself a mass week-end harvest. Last Saturday, it was the turn of the Women's Coalition for Peace:

http://coalitionofwomen.org/home/english/events/olive_harvest_201104/

The Rabbis for Human Rights take part in the harvest more than symbolically, mobilizing for already more than a month activists on a daily basis, monitoring settler abuse to the press and complaining the army. The season is nearly over; still the circles of Israelis participating are widening. It was reported on the media that  the kibbutz youth movement was busy organizing a harvest solidarity group and there are even participating sometimes settlers.

Democracy - the new excuse - by Zvi Bar'el

[A look into the current Palestinian internal dialogue - in today's paper: informative and proving its point]

"[Are] those who are demanding democracy in Palestine willing to also define the borders of the Palestinian democratic state before they demand democracy? Or is the idea to create a virtual democracy and only then foist it on every bit of land that will be liberated? This is all only hairsplitting, because the Israelis (and the Americans) who are demanding democracy in the PA would do well to rub their eyes (with astonishment, as usual) and take note of what's happening: The Palestinians themselves are demanding their democracy. They are not waiting for Israel to force them."

Farewell Arafat - by Mahmoud Darwish

"Arafat surprised us by not surprising us. Some fusion between the ailing man and the ailing narrative had preordained the end, preventing the tragic hero from imparting his unique imprint upon his fate. This time, there was no miracle, no surprise: the tragedy was reduced to a long, drawn-out, banal television serial."

Reshaping history - by Noam Chomsky

Critical review of the reporting at the occasion of the death of Arafat

"The front-page NYT think-piece (12 November) begins by depicting Arafat as "both the symbol of the Palestinian's hope for a viable, independent state and the prime obstacle to its realization". It goes on to explain that he never was able to reach the heights of President Anwar Sadat of Egypt; Sadat " [won] back the Sinai through a peace treaty with Israel" because he was able to "reach out to Israelis and address their fears and hopes" (quoting Shlomo Avineri, Israeli philosopher and former government official, in the follow-up, 13 November.
One can think of more serious obstacles to the realisation of a Palestinian state (...)."
