TIME FOR SKEPTICISM TOI-Billboard, Dec. 18 2004 ---------------------------------------- Version without line breaks available at http://www.geocities.com/keller_adam/most_recent_billboard.html --------------------------------------------------------------- [After a month that the TOI-staff was abroad, the focus of this billboard is the general political situation followed by "a collection of struggles."] --Time for skepticism - our assessment of the situation --The non-event - by Meron Benvenisti (Dec. 16) --Not one single settlement (Ha'aretz editorial Dec. 17) --Looking into the mirror: JAYYOUS --A sceptical Palestinian view - but not without seeing a way --"Please, pressure us" --Peace Now activists detained during outpost tour --Another devoted international awaiting deportation -- Time for skepticism - our assessment of the situation -- The Israeli and international media seem newly orchestrated, with expectations of "a new window of opportunity for peace" floating around. After Bush, now also the Egyptian president Mubarak explicitly credited Ariel Sharon with being "a man of peace". Sharon himself made headlines with his latest speech in which he would have us believe that in 2005 peace will descend upon us. Though one cannot reject out of hand the possibility that a veteran politician would shift his policies it is unwise to give a man like Sharon the benefit of the doubt. Disrespectful to moral values or law as he has shown himself on many occasions, a ruthless character, with a long history as the moving force behind the expansionist settler movement, we have to see the new Sharon before believing. And, the situation on the ground does not exactly warrant the upbeat mood. Today the death toll among the inhabitants of the Khan Yuneis Refugee Camp is once more increasing by the hour - in a retaliatory raid for an attack on soldiers and for mortar attacks on settlements. And, in retaliation for the retaliation, a Qassam rocket hit the Israeli town of Sderot. On TV tonight, an inhabitant whose house was narrowly missed said: "We have already to get out of there. My son is a soldier in Gaza. We have no business being there." Getting truly an improvement in the situation requires more than conveniently sitting back and waiting for Sharon to make good on his pledges. People of his kind deliver only under pressure - if at all. For such a sceptical analysis one does not only have to go to the Gush Shalom website (http://www.gush-shalom.org/english/index.html "A Whole Year") - the readers of Ha'aretz were presented with it from different sources. ~~~ <<>> The non-event - by Meron Benvenisti (Dec. 16) http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/515085.html [selected quote] "So what will Labor get out of joining the government? A little bit of respect, a little bit of influence, but mostly responsibility for the continuation of the repression, institutionalization of the annexation, moral responsibility for the harm done to humanitarian norms, and a decisive contribution to the blurring of the differences between left and right. Those Labor leaders who proudly depict their steps as heroic enlistment in the cause of peace should not deceive themselves. Their move into Sharon's government is not even shameless crawling. It is simply a non-event." ~~~ <<>> Not one single settlement (Ha'aretz editorial Dec. 17) http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/515683.html [selected quote] "(...) The representative of the State Prosecutor's office said the road map that has been approved by the government, whereby it has undertaken not to set up any new settlements in the territories, does not legally obligate the state. This amazing legal hairsplitting shows a trend of thought in Sharon's government that portends ill. It is untenable that it will demand of the Palestinians that they stick to their commitment under the road map to fight terror while ignoring its own commitment not to establish settlements." ~~~ <<>> Looking into the mirror: JAYYOUS [In the West Bank village of Jayyous the Wall has separated the Palestinians from their lands; recently the settlers started taking over these lands, building there an "extension" to their settlement much bigger than the original; this week the building company of the settlers cut down more than 100 olive tress (under army protection of course). Jayyous has become an international focus point, and a mirror of the situation. Prime Minister Sharon is the "strong man" able to implement BUT only does so when he has to, and the Palestinian people alone are not able to provide that pressure. No wonder that apart from Palestinians and internationals also Israelis call for pressure - under the lead of Shulamit Aloni. An open letter initially signed by (Israeli) Shulamit Aloni and (Palestinian) Hannan Ashrawi. to be presented to Jacques Chirac and Tony Blair, calling for effective international pressure on Israel - moderated by Oren Medicks <oren@medicks.net> reading the text and signing http://www.petitions.medicks.net ~~~ <<>> Peace Now activists detained during outpost tour http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/516021.html ~~~ <<>> Another devoted international awaiting deportation Community activist Kelly Minio-Paluello, working in Balata Refugee Camp, arrested and now awaiting deportation for filming a peaceful protest march near Ramallah http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2004/12/302889.html [quote] "On Tuesday December 14, the people of Bil'in accompanied by international and Israeli activists and journalists marched peacefully against the construction of the illegal Israeli Apartheid Wall. The village of Bil'in, located west of Ramallah, has been told that three-quarters of its land will be confiscated and handed over to the neighbouring Israeli settlement during wall construction."
