Subject: [TOI-Billboard] Mita'am - the launching of a radical literary quarterly (P.S. to yesterday) - January09, 2005

Mita'am - a new quarterly
The launching of a journal of literature and radical thought - in Hebrew

[The following is based on a letter sent by Yitzhak Laor, Mita'am Editor and
Prof. Anat Biletzki, Hashkama Chairperson at the occasion of the launching of Mita'am 1.]

Mita'am is designed to fill "an unbearable void in our cultural existence". Not only original and translated literature is in need of a radical publication. The weakest genre in Hebrew culture is the critical essay: not political articles, not book reviews - these can occasionally find a spot in the newspapers - but real essays. The first issue includes essays by historians Gabriel Piterberg and Ilan Pappe, both discussing Zionism from an angle that the critical reader has no chance of finding in Hebrew these days. Oded Schechter's philosophical essay on Yirmiyahu Yovel's Zionist concept of Spinoza is another expression of Mita'am's uniqueness. We promise to give room in each issue for one philosophical essay. Tami Israeli and Ya'ara Shehori's essay on "The Hebrew Poetry of Leisure" demarcates our preferences with regard to poetry, and in fact to prose as well: not a culture of ease, not a culture of linguistic niceties, of coquetry, but rather a constant collision with everything that is taken for granted.

In the literary section of the first issue we are proud, very proud indeed , to publish the works of several young writers. We are proud not because of their age, or their hitherto-anonymity, but because of their excellence: an amazing cycle of poems, Mother Tongue, by 22-year-old Maya Kuperman; a poem in prose by Yael Ne'eman; stories by Orian Zakay, Oz Shelach and Palestinian writer Adania Shibli (who was translated to Hebrew by Anton Shamas).

Mita'am 2 will be published in April. It is not easy to publish a quarterly. All work on the publication has been on a volunteer basis. Only with a good response of readers and donors will the initiators be able to meet the undertaking to be a quarterly. This initiative deserves your support. There are too many things to say that no newspaper or review in Israel, academic or non-academic, is willing to say. After four years of intifada, it seems as though we have gone many years backwards, not only politically speaking, but culturally as well.

The periodical is published by the Hashkama non-profit organization (no. 580433795), which was established to guarantee proper administration and compliance with all legal requirements for fundraising. Hashkama's bank account is at Bank Hapoalim, Dizengoff Center branch (branch no. 681), account number 391855. Donations can be made directly into this bank account, or cheques, made out to Hashkama, can be sent to POB 24105, Tel Aviv, zip code 61240. Single issue $23 (including air mail delivery) One year subscription (4 issues) - $72 (including air mail delivery).

Tomorrow,  Mita'am's public launching  will be accompanied with authors reading  from their work, and discussing the relations between culture and politics (Tel-Aviv, Tzavta hall, Monday Jan. 10,  starting at 8pm).  The price for admission, including a copy of the journal, will be NIS 50. Single issues will cost NIS 69 at bookstores.

Donations are more than welcome. Publication of the first issue was enabled by donations received. Future issues depend on your generosity.
