Inspiration - not from the big events (introduction)

This was the week of the most uninspired withdrawal from a Palestinian city - after repeated postponements and haggling over details the army left Jericho to make place for the police force of the Palestinian Authority.
In Cairo came about a not much more inspired cease-fire agreement by the prominent Palestinian militias; it was not called Hudna (ceasefire), but Thadiya (period of calm) as expression of scepticism as to whether Israel would fulfill its part.
And the week ended with an uninspired mass demonstration, the usual Peace Now public being called upon to support Sharon's Gaza pull-out - the people who came motivated by conscientious pragmatism rather than enthusiasm.

"Ariel, too?"Gaza pull-out demo report byAdam Keller
"Flamboyant activist Lior Kay struck a discordant note, circulating back and forth among the marchers on his roller skates and shouting: "Wake up, wake up! Withdrawal from Gaza alone is not the end of the occupation, it will not bring peace!"

Amira Hass'? dissident view on the Yad Vashem ceremony
"Israel has turned the liquidation of Europe's Jews into an asset" writes Amira Hass about the high-profile ceremony at the occasion of the reopening of the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum. "Our murdered relatives are being enlisted to enable Israel to continue not giving a damn about international decisions against the occupation." Unafraid of the "how can you compare" argument she asks: "Which of the participants in the ceremony will go to see the roads for Jews only and for Palestinians only? Will any of them protest the laws discriminating against Israeli citizens, only because they are non-Jews - Arabs - and threaten to impose sanctions unless these laws are revoked?"

To be Rabbis for Human Rights is more than preaching
To be Rabbis for Human Rights is more than preaching as is clear from their own report. This week they witnessed army and settler harassment of Palestinian farmers plowing as well as destruction of olive trees. But at least sometimes they succeed in getting financial compensation for the afflicted farmers. All that in:

Vanunu: "I don't ask people to whom I speak to show me their passport"
'Let Mordechai Vanunu go' international campaign is followed by 21 new charges brough up against him.
This week brought to Jerusalem, on behalf of Vanunu, such people as Daniel Ellsberg famous for leaking in 1971 the Pentagon Papers,?  US attorney Jennifer Harbury of the STOP Torture Campaign and Norwegian attorney Fredrik S. Heffermehl, representing Lawyers Against Nuclear Arms. But a day after they pleaded publicly for releasing Vanunu from restrictions, the state lashed out once more against the man whom they can't forgive for being unbroken after 18 years of harsh prison conditions.

Tali Fahima update
After the Supreme Court reversed the decision of the lower court, Tali Fahima was after all NOT released from prison to house arrest. She is still in prison - in isolation - now already for 7 months, and will stay there at least until the end of her trial, which is not expected before the end of this year.
International human rights bodies are continuously informed about Tali's situation and?  during the time she was an administrative detainee (5/9/2004 - 5/12//2004) she was one of the prisoners about whom Amnesty international was organizing campaigns.?  But such organizations are not involving themselves now that she is in the middle of legal proceedings and accused of assisting terrorism... Therefore, there is a need for new
forms of international support; background for organizing it at: www.freetalifahima.org.
A very important form of solidarity: sending her letters (to: Tali Fahima, Neve Tirza Prison, POBox 297, Ramleh, 72100, Israel). With no more than 2 books for a whole week to get through the time, letters from supporters worldwide can make a difference.?  For more questions, Iris Bar <nur@netvision.net.il>.

A call for withdrawal of investments from companies funding the occupation
by Israeli human rights lawyer / reservist refuser Shamai Leibowitz
? "The assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri has led to an explosion of "people power" in the streets of Beirut, in which hundreds of thousands of Lebanese citizens have called for an end to Syria's occupation of their land. These calls have been celebrated and echoed in other capitals (...). However, there is another area in the Middle East where a struggle to end foreign occupation has brought the natives only death and destruction."
'Stop the use of torture in the interrogation of peace activist Mohammed Tanji'

Even after the rapprochement of Sharm a-Sheikh, arrests of Palestinians are daily business - the excuse always being that the person "was on the way to perpetrate a terrorist attack." Among many questionable arrests the one of March 2 deserves special attention. A totally unsuspecting Tulkarem-based peace activist was singled out between bus passengers at a checkpoint control. Mohammed Tanji is member of the Israeli-Palestinian organization ???Windows??? (involved in dialogue and humanitarian aid) and his Israeli comrades started sending frentic emails.
Tanji, who was subjected to long interrogations, got the support of PCATI (Public Comittee Against Torture in Israel), the untiring human rights organization following meticulously what is going on during interrogations in general. For the appeal to the Supreme Court which they lodged about this case:
Nurit Peled-Elhanan's speech to the European Parliament
? - in a debate about violence against women -
Thank you for inviting me to this day (...) However, I believe you should have invited a Palestinian woman at my stead, because the women who suffer most from violence in my county are the Palestinian women. And I would like to dedicate my speech to Miriam R`aban and her husband Kamal, from Bet Lahiya in the Gaza Strip, whose five small children were killed by Israeli soldiers while picking strawberries at the family`s strawberry field. No one will ever stand trial for this murder.
"Sent Halutz flying home!" officially declared not threatening public order
In response to a petition by Yesh Gvul, Tel Aviv district judge Avraham Tal has overturned a ruling by Ramat Gan mayor Zvi Bar, barring a YG poster from the city's billboards. The poster features incoming IDF chief of staff Dan Halutz with a red cross over his face and the caption "Sent Halutz flying home!" Bar regarded the cross as a call to kill Halutz - but the judge ruled that the poster does not threaten the public order or offend public sentiments, and that preference should be given to freedom of expression.

The first two new COs to report to the army Tuesday
The new declaration of refusal by 250 high school students ("shministim") about which we wrote last week has gotten abundant attention in the media, including two full news pages in the mass-circulation Yediot Aharonot. The first two, Alex Kon and Eyal Brami, are due to report at the IDF Tel Hashomer induction center on Tuesday 8am , accompanied by a crowd of supporters.
