The Putin mystery
Robert Rosenberg's  April 28 'Today's Situation' comment

So what exactly is Vladimir Putin doing here? Is he trying to elbow
Russia back into the Middle East as an arms supplier to the Arabs? Trying
to impress the Americans before his upcoming summit with Bush? Trying to
strike a good deal for Gazprom??™s natural gas? Maybe he??™s trying to impress
upon Russian Jews in Israel that they could consider going ???home???™ Maybe
he??™s trying to impress Russian Orthodox Christians with his visit to the
Holy Sepulcher and the Gethsemane basilica?

The parable of Putin's visit by Doron Rosenblum
But wait a minute, we almost forgot the "political achievements" of the visit: a condemnation of anti-Semitism and a rejection of the despicable attempt by the guest to propose a peace plan.

Activism update

Salt bullets attack on demonstration
Gush Shalom on Palestinian-Israeli  Bil`in action

"All the participants - about 1000 Palestinians and 200 Israelis - undertook in advance to avoid all violence. However, before the demo could reach the site of the fence, it was savagely attacked by the security forces, which bombarded it with tear gas bombs without the slightest provocation."

Plowing for human rights
From the 28 April Rabbis for Human Rights week report

On Monday the RHR delegation and the Palestinian farmers with whom they were working  were attacked by settlers from Itamar, our group was cursed, pushed and even beaten. We are very fortunate to report that there were no injuries. Today, before our delegation arrived to the field, two Palestinian farmers from the village of Rujib, who arrived early in the morning, were chased away by settlers. It took us a while to find them and pursuade them to come back and work their land. Despite all of this we have succeeded in helping quite a few farmers gain access to their fields and orchards that they were able to reach for  years.

International phonecall campaign on behalf of shackled meningitis patient

At the initiative of IWPS, with follow-up by Gush Shalom, a frentic international campaign may have relieved a bit the past days for Jaber Dalany - but it could not be prevented that he was moved from the hospital into detention in a wheelchair.

'There is Law' - grandmothers take on the police to see law enforced in territories, Lily Galili

A small group gathered last Monday in Ibrahim Alam's house in the West Bank village of Tolat. A number of village residents came to report the harm and physical damage they and their property suffered in attacks by Jewish settlers.

One big prison - new report, B'tselem & Hamoked

An add in the weekend papers:
http://www.themarker.com/ads/2005/NEWenglish/betzelm/300

"For the past four and a half years, Israel has severely restricted freedom of movement to and from the Gaza Strip. These restrictions further strangled the Gaza Strip, so much so that the area resembles one gigantic prison. The report warns against Israel??™s attempt to avoid its responsibility toward residents of the Gaza Strip following disengagement."

Hypocrisy of the liberals - condemnation, but..., Ha'aretz Editorial April 27

When the State of Israel denies Arab students and their families freedom of movement to the universities where they are students, and the even more basic right to earn a dignified livelihood free of the occupation, when the separation fence in Jerusalem is going up on the campus of Al Quds University, it is difficult to argue that Israel adheres to the basic values that it rightfully demands the British university lecturers uphold.

'Engage' - Palestinian state - yes, but Israel not illegitimate

As a result of the AUT decision to boycott Bar Ilan and Haifa universities a new group was formed in Britain: people, who are themselves opponents of the occupation, worried that the selective boycott is but the beginning of a campaign against the existence of Israel.  They organized themselves in 'Engage' and.. their newly-started website also includes the refusers' banner

Averting another disaster, Alex Fishman

"If the state does not have sufficient funds to train reservists properly, it should not call them up for service and refrain from sending them to the West Bank and Gaza."

This criticism by the mainstream Yediot Aharonot military commentator may apply to more than the chances of soldiers getting killed by 'friendly fire'.

Jailed for 17 years with no `blood on his hands,' no luck, Amira Hass

The Supreme Court recognized the severity of the sentence in its response
to a petition in January 2000 (...) against the refusal of the chief of staff to reduce his 27-year sentence [but the] justices rejected the petition.
