About sheep fodder and long-imprisoned COs, and more
TOI-Billboard - November 1, 2005

-assesment of the situation, action updates, translations from the Hebrew press-

"Last week, all over the Palestinian territories, the miserable living conditions were made even worse. That looks like collective punishment, which is forbidden by the Fourth Geneva Convention. But in reality, it was something worse: the aim is to sow despair among the Palestinians, bring them to their knees, compel them to accept Sharon's diktat - to be content with 42% of the West Bank (11% of pre-1948 Palestine) in several enclaves - and, ultimately, to convince them to emigrate altogether."

PA official: Cooperation with Israel is nothing but `smoke and mirrors` (DPA).

It's difficult to find a constructive perspective. The fact that after 38 years of occupation the Gaza Strip has been turned from an occupied into a besieged territory (while in the West Bank settlement expansion and wall construction are in high gear) does not entice Palestinians to stop fighting - however hard President Abbas tries to deny PM Sharon the pretext. [Right now: news of another IDF assassination of another 'arch-terrorist' in Gaza, and Israelis in Sderot are preparing for another night in the shelters.] The only hope: that the international community (and the Israeli Labor Party!) will wake up from the 'Sharon Peacemaker' dream and make at last some use of their leverage.

Meanwhile also this week Palestinians in Bil'in were lifted from their beds and arrested because of their participation in the Friday non-violent anti-Wall protests (see ISM archive in the end); and the Rabbis for Human Rights organize, day after day, olive harvest support for farmers in different villages suffering from settler harassment. And here follow some other examples of the day to day struggle.

Aqaba - the sheep are back, but what will they eat?

Two weeks ago Gush Shalom sent out an urgent appeal on behalf of the shepherds of Aqaba village. Though never did anybody of the tiny village ever participate even in stone-throwing, they are for years targeted by the army.  The military sees this environment as 'a strategic area' and  the location of Aqaba as an obstacle.

Protest phones, faxes and emails from all over the world were aimed at the release of the confiscated fifty sheep belonging to the Dabak family. The sheep were eventually released, but meanwhile we were informed that since then the shepherds are prevented from grazing them in the fields around ('security reasons'). Therefore Haj Sami Sadek - the Aqaba Mayor - asked us to publish a call for donations, to help them buy fodder for the sheep which are on the brink of starving.

CO Alex Cohn starts ninth term

Since the beginning of this year, young Tel-Avivian Alex Cohn is going in and out of the military prison for his refusal to be part of an army of occupation. The method is simple and repetititve: Alex gets to the recruitment center, is ordered to enlist, refuses, and is rushed through a 'instant trial' held in camera at an officer's bureau without lawyer, witnesses or anything resembling a due judicial process, and lasting about five minutes. At the end, he is sentenced to a month in prison, after which he comes back and the process repeats itself.

There is nothing in the law preventing the army from repeating this for the next thirty or forty years. The only limitation is Israeli and international public opinion which so far showed unfortunately very little interest.

A manifestly immoral supersonic boom

With one aerial foray, Halutz managed to unite the babies of Gaza and Holon in one big trauma.

By Oren Reis

Published at October 30 on the Hebrew website Y-Net affiliated to Yediot Aharonot, but not on their parallel English-language website. English translation provided by TOI.

Undoubtedly, this unfocused weapon causes fears and traumas among many children, at Khan Yunes and Nahal Oz. Palestinian or Israeli, a child is a child and waking up from a terrible noise which makes the entire parental home shake does not conduct to a healthy development. Facing the Jihad threats to "shake Israel", the Air Force took pre-emptive action and itself shook up our population centres together with those of our adversaries. On the way to implementing this nefarious tactic, some moral values had been eroded even further.

In Gaza are living people - not cardboard toys!

The following protest against the shelling of Gaza was circulated in Hebrew on one of the Israeli Tapuz Discussion Forums and apparently comes from within the rmy.
Translation: TOI.

Hi,
I ask you to spread this! To as many people as possible!
We have already collected some signatures, I ask any artilleryman who wants to join to contact me at
simlev81@walla.com.

I am worried and ask for your support!
Thanks, hoping for a more sane time.

We must stop the madness! This time you won't be able to say "I didn??™t know".

This time you would not be able to say that it was a mistake by the gunlayer, the aimer, the battery commander or the Central Fire Control. Mistakes, disasters and murders by the Artillery are facts of the past and a danger for the future!

The Artillery Corps is not an effective tool for the task now imposed on it. At such a thickly-populated area as Gaza, artillery pieces are nothing but a danger to the population - and also a danger to us, to our international image.

Setting an artillery battery to shell targets in the heart of a civilian population will inevitably, sooner or later, lead to a terrible disaster which will hand an enormous victory to the Hamas and Jihad.

Sooner or later, a shell will go off course and kill dozens or even hundreds of Palestinian civilians, most of them completely innocent. Israel will be placed at the pillory and possibly be even subjected to  international sanctions.

A single fiasco is all it would take to place the Hamas and Jihad at the very gates of the political victory which they desire.

There will be intensive international involvement in the Territories, aimed at protecting the Palestinians people from Israeli brutality and massacres. We will, of course, claim that it was nothing but a regrettable mistake, completely unintended. But nobody will listen to us - and rightly so.

The price in blood resulting from this inevitable coming fiasco will be unforgivable.
We will not be able to deal with another massacre of civilians like that at Kanna Village in Lebanon, in 1996, where more than a hundred human beings were murdered by a single artillery shell.

We, fighters of the Artillery Corps, make our call loud and clear:

Restrain Defence Minister Mofaz and his friends!
Don??™t let our fighting comrades become the "unintended" mass murderers of civilians!
In Gaza there are living people, not cardboard toys!

Remember - a stray shell is a victory for terror!

You can calm down, there will be war!

By Ofer Shelach

[Yediot Aharonot editorial, October 30]

How long, and for which real goal, can we live with perpetual suspiciousness and arrogance of power, blind faith in naked power and self-righteousness that justifies every misdeed? How long can we go on telling ourselves that there are no partners for peace nor ever will be, and calm ourselves down only with the certainty of war?

And anti-nuclear Nobel Peace Prize - but  not to Vanunu

By Gideon Spiro

Translated for Occupation Magazine by Mark Marshall

This year the calculations were that the prize would be related to the nuclear issue, because of the 60th anniversary of the dropping of the atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and they turned out to be correct. (...) If there is a person who is deserving of the Nobel Prize for Peace for his struggle against nuclear weapons, Mordechai Vanunu is the man.
