Nothing like a suicide bomb in an election campaign
TOI-Billboard, December 11, 2005
The Other Israel's weekly email updates

This week

December 5, a day after the Israeli "Defence" forces restarted the practice of assassinations, there was already a suicide bombing in Netanya. Both sides had of course to prepare themselves in advance, but they were standing ready to embark on another round of lethal tit for tat as soon as they would see the other side blink. The match was between two who suffered each for their own reasons from election worries: Minister of Defence Mofaz (just before bolting the Likud Party where the polls gave him little chance of winning the leadership) and Islamic Jihad which has no mass following assuring it of parliamentary seats in the PA January elections. Funerals have become again a daily TV feature, and the social issue was pushed back to second place.

Yesterday, Saturday, family and friends of refusnik Uri Natan made it to Military Prison 4 at the call of Yesh Gvul. Uri is one of those who go through a long-drawn process of "serial disciplinary imprisonments", i.e. without court martial, thus saving the army to have to deal with the refuser's defence lawyer. The refuser is between two weeks to a month in prison, to be immediately afterwards called-up again and upon his repeated refusal he is on the spot reincarcerated (sometimes "after the weekend"). This time Uri was handed a 35 day term.

Neither Sharon nor Peretz is willing to pay the price for peace
Shaul Arieli,  Dec. 4, 2005

Amir Peretz (..) said at the memorial rally for Yitzhak Rabin that "the Oslo Process is not dead," but quickly told voters he was not in favor of the Geneva Accord and that Jerusalem would remain united in any final status agreement.

High Court to hear petitions against targeted killings
By Yuval Yoaz,  Dec. 11, 2005

According to [State Prosecutor for Special Issues] Nitzan, as a result of the end of Israeli military control in the Gaza Strip following the disengagement, Gaza is subject to the "law of war" under which the killings are legally permissible, rather than the "laws of occupation" or the "laws of belligerent occupation" that governed the area previously.

The safe passage: The history of a farce
Gideon Levy

Between this headline and the fearsome main headline in Yedioth Ahronoth three
weeks ago ("Hundreds of Palestinians will travel between Ashkelon and Kiryat Gat"),
and between the headline in Haaretz on August 11, 1994 ("Rabin: Israel is already
prepared to open the safe passage next week"), there have been hundreds of news
items. They report about thousands of hours of talks, dozens of committees and
conferences, an endless number of meetings, declarations and signed agreements
dealing with the passage between the two parts of the Palestinian Authority, which
many in Israel have regarded as almost a state for some time.

Candy-wrapped poison
By Doron Rosenblum

Politicians will always paint an upgraded picture of their achievements in office, and that's when they're not handing out
"election economy" perks and bribes. -- This is not so when it comes to defense. Here the pill is actually sweetened by portraying things as blacker than they are. In "election defense," as opposed to "election economy," the public is showered with threats and intimidation.
