...peace between combatants
TOI-Billboard, April 10, 2006
The Other Israel's email updates

We write this billboard once more in the midst of escalation.

Our government is engaged - with help of the rest of the world - in isolating the Palestinians and closing the financial tap. The purpose: to reverse the Palestinian election result. So far however the only result is that  Qassams continue to be fired, those poor men's rockets which are too primitive to be intercepted but which mostly fall somewhere in a field.  Now the Israeli army started in retaliation to bomb and bombard inhabitants of the Gaza Strip - from land, air and sea. In just two days this left already more than twenty dead, among them several children. Today a nine-year old girl was killed inside her home. At this very moment  a protest is being prepared for tomorrow in Tel-Aviv.

But... there was today also news which raises in spite of everything a spark of hope:

120 former Israeli, Palestinian combatants in peace drive
Reuters - Ha'aretz internet (Last update 20:47 April 10)

(...) "This is the breakthrough event, to say to the world we are here," Avichay Sharon, 24, a former IDF soldier told Reuters. "We don't want to look at each other through weapon sights, we want to see each other as human."   Added Palestinian Osama Abu Karsh, 35, jailed for three years by Israel for attacking troops with firebombs: "Both our sides have been fighting, but we want to sit at the same table. We hope we can achieve something."

As things stand now Olmert's formation of a new government would give the Defense Ministry to the  Labor Party So - the next demonstration at the Defence Ministry gate may be against Amir Peretz...

Avoiding failure with Hamas
Robert Malley - International Herald Tribune (April 10)

(...) though there's genuine uncertainty over whether Hamas ultimately can come up with the right answer, halting aid to the Palestinian Authority almost certainly will yield the wrong one.

There is no hunger in Gaza
Gideon Levy - Ha'aretz (April 9)

(...) The real humanitarian disaster in the territories began a long time ago, and it is not hunger. Those who regard the neighboring people as human beings know this very well. It is true that the dimensions of the disaster are worsening, but that's been taking place over years, and the food index is not the only measure. The cessation of the flow of funding since the rise of Hamas might threaten to depress the economic situation even further, but the thought that if they only have enough food, their needs will be satisfied and our conscience can be clear, is outrageous.

Time is ripe for borders

Moshe Amirav - Ha'aretz (April 09)

[Dr Moshe Amirav who fulfilled the role of 'adviser on Jerusalem affairs' during the Barak government, thinks that now is the time to square the circle.]

(...) For 80 years hostile and shifting frontiers left the Israelis perplexed with regard to the question: "Where are they and where are we, what is theirs and what is ours?" In recent years international and even Arab legitimacy has crystallized concerning Israel's eastern border.
