The protests go on, just as the bombings...
TOI-Billboard, April 15, 2006

Other Israel's email updates
--While most Israelis were
busy with their Pesach cleaning the unscrupled bombing of Gaza went on -
without bringing an end to the shooting of the clumsy Qassam rockets, and
without getting much media attention. Defense Minister Mofaz seems right
now to escalate as much as he can, in the hope of preventing that -
with coalition negotiations going on - his job will be given to Labor's Amir
Peretz ("in such a critical situation the Defence Ministry must remain in
the hands of a former general")...
On the eve before the holiday
- after an 8-year old girl got killed inside her home and her pregnant
mother wounded - in Tel-Aviv protesters
walked the sea shore demanding a
cease-fire.

--Every day teams of Israeli women - Machsom
Watch - monitor the many notorious checkpoints and write it all down
in meticulous reports. It's all in their site; visit now and see the
exposition with many photos and video footage. Without showing
bloodshed, prhibitthis series of photos conveys the impact of daily
humiliation; the exposition was already in Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv
but was prohibited by the Be'er Sheva Municipality.

(...) enormous government resources are spent for the creation of “Giv’ot Bar”, a community earmarked for the settlement of Jews on el-Okbi tribal land which was our fathers’ and their fathers’ fathers. Looking in the other direction we can see how in another part of our ancestral land there are brought in Bedouins of another tribe, Tarabin a-Sana, whom the authorities want to remove from where they now live, in order to expand the affluent Be'er Sheba suburb of Omer. We have nothing against either these nor these. The whole of our legitimate and elementary demand is to be allowed to create an agricultural community on the part of our ancestral land which is still free – an agricultural community of our own, rather then being “concentrated” into the government’s “Bedouin Townships”, a “solution” which we completely reject (...) full press release http://www.geocities.com/toi_billboard/Okbi.htm --The struggle of
Bil'in against the Wall continues already for more than a year. The
devoted Bil'iners as well as their Israeli and international friends
succeeded this week to catch the attention of the most read Israeli daily Yediot
Aharonot. A six page-article in the weekend supplement answers the
question why Israeli youngsters "from bourgeois families" spent their
Fridays confronting the army, including the case of Matan Cohen who is still not
fully recovered from the bullet in his eye. Alas, no link exists to
this Hebrew-only article nor was it so far
translated...

(...) IDF attacks almost always strike the innocent. The reason
they are being fired is psychological. They are intended to give Israelis a nice
feeling for the beginning of Pesach – "See, the IDF isn't sitting on its hands.
Quite the opposite, the army is using what the media admiringly calls its 'iron
fist', and is striking painful blows to the innocent."
The last conquest
of Jerusalem
Gideon
Lichfield e.a., Apr 12th 2006 - The Economist
(...) After
millennia of violent conquest and reconquest, Jerusalem, centre of pilgrimage,
crucible of history and the world's oldest international melting-pot, is
changing hands once more, but with a slow and quiet finality. Israel redrew the
municipal boundary after the 1967 war to enclose some of the West Bank land that
it had occupied, a de facto (though not internationally recognised)
annexation.
Settlements like Har Homa gradually encroached on the empty spaces. In 2002, as the second intifada raged, and central Jerusalem took the brunt of suicide bombings, Israel started building the West Bank barrier or wall, supposedly to keep out Palestinian bombers. But its route, enclosing Palestinian as well as Jewish neighbourhoods of Jerusalem (see map), suggested another purpose too. TOI-Billboard updates you in between the issues of
