Who is occupying whom?

The right to a state of the ... must be recognized.
The threat to the existence of ... by ... must stop.
But, who is actually occupying whom?

This week:

--The struggle against the ever-expanding Wall by Palestinians, Israelis and internationals took place this week on different days and in different locations. Saturday in Tuwani, South Hebron Hills, soldiers and grey-uniformed riot police behaved so aggressive to the non-violent demonstrators that some Israeli TV reporters didn't know what to say, and on Channel-10 the police brutality was explicitly condemned and shown in detail.

We also translated for you an extensive interview with three of the Anarchists Against The Wall which appeared prominently in Yediot Aharonot, April 14.

--The Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) came out against the expulsion of the Palestinian parliamentarians who are residents of East Jerusalem, to which the government decided in reaction to the suicide bombing in Tel-Aviv, killing nine.
ACRI adv. Oded Feller sent an urgent appeal to Attorney General Menny Mazuz asking him to instruct the government to reverse its decision which would take away residency status of several newly-elected Palestinian lawmakers.
Feller argues that none of the Palestinian parliamentarians was himself involved in "hostile and severe actions against the security of the state" - the only reason which could perhaps have justified such punishment.

Meanwhile, Gush Shalom took position against  a Supreme Court decision. The judges gave their consent to the finalizing of the Separation Wall in Jerusalem, with its route cutting Palestinian East Jerusalem into two.

Philosophy of death

By Nazir Majali, April 24, 2006

There are no words to adequately condemn the despicable attack in Tel
Aviv. Not only because it is contrary to the interests of the Palestinian
people and not only because it serves the interests of the many warmongers
in our region. But rather, most importantly because of the philosophy
that is behind it, a philosophy that is destroying the Palestinian people.
It is a philosophy of death, which prefers death to life.(...)

(...) Israel must also shake off the flourishing philosophy of
death, which it does not express by terror attacks, but rather by
bombardment in the Gaza Strip, breaking into houses and assassinations -
which are killings without trial - mass arrests (there are 1,200
administrative detainees for whom there is no basis for an indictment),
roadblocks, closures, humiliation, etc.

Europe is not in the deal

By Akiva Eldar,  April 24, 2006

() We took into account the fact that during the election campaign, it was hard for the government to transfer the tax money to the Palestinians, says [Marc Otte, the EU special representative for the Middle East peace process] but according to the agreement, this money belongs to them, and we made it clear to the Israeli government that it cannot keep the money.
In regard to the violation of the crossings agreement, Otte is also outspoken in his condemnation: If Israel does not want to buy products from the Gaza Strip, we will buy them, he continues. But let the businessmen work. They are the last ones who are interested in terror attacks. Don't forget that 55 percent of the Palestinians did not vote for Hamas.
He does not believe in concrete walls, nor in various types of disengagements.
The Israelis want to build a wall and imagine that there are no people behind it, says Otte. That is an illusion. Everything will come back to them. You cannot lock the door and throw away the key.

Hungry and shell-shocked

By Amira Hass, Fri., April 21, 2006

GAZA - Where will the next blow land? That is the question. Not if it will come, but rather when, and on whom will it land, and what kind will it be?

Five-year-old L. believes the solution is to sleep every night in his parents' bed, and in that way to be protected from the shelling. But even there he is not able to fall asleep because he is so worried and afraid.

In the kindergarten in the yard outside the house, the children speak all the time about the "booms" that fill their day. Booms from the sea and booms from the land. Day and night. Sometimes three per minute, sometimes three per hour. Sometimes simultaneously from the land and from the sea.(...)

What for?
Victoria Buch, Occupation Magazine
22.4.06

(...) I have an old aunt in Lithuania. During her lifetime she has lived under four regimes, and has seen it all. (...) Once I asked her: Why did Russians wage war on Chechnia? They let go of much richer republics – Ukraine, Georgia. What is so important about Chechnia? (...)  She said Vitochka, haven’t you read Tolstoy? Fighting Chechens is a long standing Russian tradition!”
