New-old government
TOI-Billboard, May 6, 2006
The Other Israel's email updates

Amir Peretz, the man 'who put the social issue on the Israeli agenda' is since yesterday Israel's Defence Minister. That makes him, among other things, responsible for the wellfare of millions of  Palestinians who are right now being starved into submission. No signs so far that the new Olmert government, to which Peretz committed himself, intends to change that...

It was the week of the memorials: Holocaust Day followed shortly by The Day of the Fallen Soldiers culminating in Yom Ha’atzmaut (Independence Day).

The Yesh Gvul (Reservist Refusers’) Alternative Independence Day Ceremony is itself already a tradition. Modeled after the official one, every year twelve ‘peace heroes’ are lightning a torch and make a short speech on the steps of the Israel Bank, opposite the Prime Minister’s Office, entrance to the garden called ‘Emil Greenzweig’ (after the 1983 Peace Now activist murdered there).

The Palestinian-Israelis' commemoration of the Naqba ('Disaster') though generally following not the Jewish calendar have also got on their way; the Arab Knesset Members' participation in the march along destroyed villages  made anti-Arab racist KM Avigdor Lieberman call for their death (sic!), which may have been not more than venting frustration of himself not having been admitted to the ranks of the new government coalition...

An especially remarkable Naqba initiative of the Zochrot group:

and, of course, Bil'in

The
violence typically begins as hundreds of protesters advance on lines of badly outmanned troops trying to block the way to the village's land, which lies on the other side of the fence. The pushing, shoving and shouting, along with the troops' inability to keep the protesters back, is what sets off the use of tear gas, concussion grenades, batons, rubber bullets and, in at least one lethal incident, live fire. The lie of victory

Bradley Burston about 10 versions of the same lie  (Ha'aretz internet blog "A special place in hell")

  8. We don't recognize them.

But we do, of course. Hamas talks about Israel incessantly. Israel talks about Hamas in nearly every breath. Then sides have an endless array of go-betweens managing every conceivable aspect of indirect contacts.

This lie is, in turn, similar to but not the same as:

  7. There is no partner

Stop a Home Demolition

Help Us Send 2,000 Letters to Mayor of Jerusalem
Rabbis for Human Rights: Your 200 letters helped avert a demolition in March. A flood of letters now can make real the hopes we expressed when we presented the family with a grape vine and fig tree.

MachsomWatch reports from checkpoints, 23.4.06--29.4.06
Etzyon DCL, 23.4.06 -- “Dozens of men waiting in two lines for their biometric card. Some people came the night before so as to get a good spot in line… Many people seek our help to enter Israel for medical appointments. A grandfather of a 4-year old, who was run over and is in intensive pediatric care at Hadassah, is the only one in the family with a chance of getting in, but has to wait like everyone else. Other people have appointments for post-operative care or for operations (a 6-year old)… But no one has a chance of getting the permit today”

We remember - but differently:

Dr. Nurit Elhanan-Peled writes to the prime minister
Akiva Eldar - Ha`aretz - "I saw soldiers use their guns to threaten Palestinian children who brought us water and wanted to play a little outside of their homes-prisons. Marzel advised the soldiers to blow us up because we are leftists, and his wife cursed us, while a bunch of their offspring showered us with rocks. And this was all happening under the watchful guard of Israel Defense Forces soldiers.."

The choice is now
Angela Godfrey-Goldstein - hanitzotz.com/challenge - "So who, now, will stand up for free Palestine? The choice is now. Ongoing conflict and official apartheid, or finally, once and for all, real peace. Finally, a viable Palestine."

Days of thunder
Gideon Levy - Haaretz - " Little Meisa walks around barefoot among the ruins of her home, stepping on a carpet of glass splinters. In silence she walks among the ruins, here and there, not knowing what to do with herself. Her gray face expresses shock. Meisa does not say a word, it is impossible to get even a trace of a smile from her. This child is now a victim of shock."

Palestinian small businesses cut customer credit
