Another bloodbath, another protest, and that's not all...
TOI-Billboard, June 19, 2006
The Other Israel's email updates

While the debate about the Gaza beach massacre goes on, we will not give more on this than some rather exceptional articles in the Israeli press. But first, we have to ask your attention for some of the other problems which refuse to go away, and - yes also - some rare constructive views.

Another bloodbath, another protest
At noon last Tuesday (June 12) news came of the killing of eleven Palestinians, eight of them civilians, in the bombing of Gaza. Quick mobilization brought nearly 200 activists to the Defence Ministry gates

The demonstrations of June 10 and June 13 still reverberated throughout the week, two examples.

Nori El-Okbi: detained again - surprise release by judge
Bedouin activist Nori El-Okbi is now entering the third month of his struggle aimed at getting a (very partial) measure of justice for his dispossessed Negev Bedouin tribe. Following is the text of a press release we got from the Association for Bedouin Rights some days ago, fairly typical of the kind of repression Nori has to face but also of the support he gets and the minor successes occasionally achieved.

Bilateral ceasefire

Gershon Baskin, Ynet News, June 15, 2006

The current temporary calm in the shooting of Qassams ordered by Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh is a convenient opportunity to re-evaluate Israel’s tactics in dealing with this acute problem. The reality of the heavy toll that the Palestinians have paid in the past week has hit home and the conclusions and lessons learned should point in the direction of the possibility of reaching a longer-term bilateral ceasefire. (...)

The issue is not whether Hamas recognises Israel

Henry Siegman,  June 8 2006, Financial Times

What hope there may still be for avoiding a complete meltdown in the Palestinian occupied territories, not to speak of the hope of ever achieving a two-state solution, lies not with the initiative by Mahmoud Abbas, Palestinian Authority president, to put the two-state formula to a popular referendum but with the ruling Hamas movement's refusal to play by Israel's old rules. Those rules have in effect eliminated the prospect of viable Palestinian statehood and were intended to achieve that end. (...)

Shalt Thou Slay the Righteous Together With the Wicked?

Bloody go-round

One day, we kill

Another day, we apologize

Yet another day, we find ourselves not guilty

Yet another day , we kill again

Time has come for an independent investigation of all killings

Time has come for an immediate Israeli-Palestinian ceasefire

Time has come for starting to talk, without preconditions

Blood on the wings

Yehonathan Gefen, Ma'ariv, June 15
Translation: Adam Keller

(...) Who in the enlightened West really cares? certainly not Bush and Blair. "We don't count bodies" said general Tommy Franks, commander of the American force which came as the Iraqi people's liberators and benefactors. And we are going the same way. -- Is there anybody up there - somebody above the missiles, above the explosions and the killings of innocents - who can put an end to these pinpoint preventions and little massacres of little bodies?

The corrections

Doron Rosenblum, Haaretz, 15 June 2006

So in any event the solution, as far as we are concerned, is, as usual, escalation? -- "Seeking calm, we have no other choice. That was exactly what a military commentator on TV had in mind a couple of months back, when he said - naturally, in the name of the IDF - that Israel was planning to launch thousands of shells and was deliberately escalating the situation 'with the goal of snapping Hamas out of its indifference, and every response by them will be for the good.' Get it? If Hamas doesn't respond, we will say that we won from the point of view of deterrence. And if it responds with terrorism, its true murderous face will be exposed - not the once that offers hudnas- chmudnas, not the one that wears suits and ties and offers four years of quiet."
