HEALTH & FITNESS

Is it hunger, or just a craving?

By J.C. Carroll

(NC)—You and I may be able to pinpoint the difference between true hunger and a food craving when we are not hungry, but it's much harder to pinpoint our triggers. Explanations for the physical and psychological desire for foods are still a mystery to researchers, according to data on HealthyOntario.com, the Ontario government's health information website operated by the Ministry of Health Promotion.

Physiological hunger generally comes on slowly and may be accompanied by physical symptoms such as a grumbling stomach, or feeling a little unfocused and dizzy. It's your body's way of saying it needs fuel and you need to eat.

Cravings are directed at a specific food, taste, or texture. Cravings may push us to eat even when our body doesn't need more fuel. If, for example, you feel like having something to eat just one or two hours after a meal, then you're probably experiencing a craving without hunger.

What to do

Researchers believe that it takes about 20 minutes for your brain to send the signal to your stomach that it is full. If you have just had a meal and are still craving a food item, wait it out. If you still have the craving 20 minutes later, allow yourself a small portion. For those who care about better health, here are few tips on this subject from the reliable HealthyOntario.com:

• If it's been three to four hours since your last meal, your hunger pangs are probably real, and you should eat something.

• Emotionally based cravings occur when people feel bored, lonely or anxious. If this is the case, you need to find out why and then target that need.

• Plan for snacks ahead of time to avoid cravings, or to keep them from getting out of control. Don't deny yourself a reasonable portion of a favourite food since deprivation can lead to binging.

• Drink a big glass of water if you suspect a craving, and wait to see if it passes. Studies suggest we often mistake thirst for hunger.

HOMEMAKING

Storing Seasonal items until next year

(NC)—As Fall brings cooler weather, it's time to swap seasons, trading in the lawnmower and shorts for the snow blower and sweater. With every seasonal change, it's important to remember that proper storage of tools and clothes will prolong their life, so consider these seasonal storage tips from The Home Depot Canada before you pack Summer items away.

Lay to Rest the Lawnmower - After winterizing your lawnmower, store it in a well ventilated area away from open sparks or flame and avoid high humidity areas as humidity can rust metallic parts. Be sure to place the mower's wheels on a level surface as slight distortions can twist the wheels over time and create a memory in the metal that can affect the mower's accuracy when cutting. Cover the machine to keep dust from collecting and make sure that the covering material is porous enough to allow for air circulation.

Solutions: Shed - A garden shed is an ideal place to store patio furniture, garden tools and other summer items, ensuring that they are safe from the harsh elements of winter. If you are using your garage for storage, ensure that windows and doors are secure to keep Jack Frost and nosey neighbors out.

Sayonara Summer Clothes - Make sure your clothing has been properly laundered and dried before storing. Special garment bags with cedar balls are good at keeping away moths but cloth bags are best for the seasonal storage of clothes because they allow for some air circulation and prevent mildew.

Bring in the Bins - Clear storage bins are also a good option for clothes or seasonal items as these containers can be stored under a bed, in a closet, or in a temperature-controlled basement or attic. The clear plastic also allows viewing of contents when searching for that favorite item of clothing, etc.

More do-it-yourself seasonal storage tips are available online at www.homedepot.ca or at The Home Depot store in your community.

PARENTING

Avoid the kitchen table: Quick tips for creating a healthy homework space

(NC)—Toronto. Today's students are sitting for longer periods of time doing homework or using the computer. An improperly designed workspace can lead not only to poor posture but also to neck, shoulder and back pain.

"Creating a healthy ergonomically correct workstation can go a long way towards preventing muscle tension and pain in the shoulders and back." says Sue Pridham, a health and wellness consultant for Staples Business Depot and president of Tri Fit Inc. She offers these quick tips.

1. Create a space dedicated to homework and using the computer.

2. Ensure the workstation is big enough to hold all your equipment and frequently used items are close by to avoid excessive twisting or reaching.

3. Position computer monitor at arms length away with the top of the monitor at eye level.

4. Use a document holder when typing from a textbook or document to avoid unnecessary head twisting. Place the holder next to the screen.

5. Use a height adjustable chair – with a comfortable seat, good back support and adjustable arm rests and back. For computer work, adjust the chair's seat slightly backwards up to 5 degrees to create more lumbar support in the backrest. When writing, tilt the seat slightly forward to reduce pressure on the discs in the spine. Allow for a hand – width distance between the back of your knee and the edge of your chair.

6. Ensure proper sitting position:

Arm rests: elbows rest close to your body and bent at 90 degrees.

Seat: hips and knees at 90 degree angle, thighs parallel to the floor. Sit all the way back in your chair, to avoid slouching and poor posture.

Wrists: neutral or slightly up.

Shoulders: relaxed, not hunched or forward.

Feet : resting flat on the ground. If they don't consider using a foot rest.

7. Use a negative slope/tilt down keyboard system.

8. Ensure the mouse fits the size of your hand or use a smaller keyboard for a better fit.

9. Use glare-free screen- reduces eye strain.

10. Take stretch breaks every 20 minutes.
